The second meeting of the Connecticut Drummers Association met on Monday night (Aug 22, 2011) at the Main Street Pub in Manchester, CT. It was then I realized I really do know a lot of drummers, out of the dozen of attendees I knew almost all of them. A lot of major drummers in the state such as Eddie Bast (Pandemonium, Ariel 51), Matt Chirsky (Darik and the Funbags, Sex & Candy), Paul Pedro (Zoom Live) and my friend Carl Liano of Hot Mess were present, along with a host of others.
The Connecticut Drummers Association is the brainchild of James Cori currently playing in Frank and the Beans and co-host of What Trivia and Joshua Briley of Circus Ninjas and Mina Rocks. The association is a non-profit group promoting opportunities for young drummers and parents who want to pursue an education or career in drumming. They intend to hold all ages events throughout the year and are focusing on raising a scholarship fund of at least a $1000/year.
They also intend to write features about drumming on major blogs such as ours here at LBR and their own at ctdrummers.org. They have some great articles on their blog from many contributors and over 60 members on the Facebook page.
The guest speakers for the evening was Rock Steady Drums and Company a new custom drum company based in Southbury CT. Talking to Hayley King (formally of Hot Tub Lava Lamp) and Ari the two people involved in this currently part time enterprise you can sense their passion. All their kits are crafted of solid maple shells and are built to cutom specifications. The samples they brought for the presentation where artfully constructed.
Another person I met was Jay Wood who teaches drumming at Manchester Community College, he offered his services in putting together some classes for beginning drummers.
If you are into drumming or are just curious I would check out this group, you can’t find a more enthusiastic crowd. The Main Street Pub is also a great place to meet and has great food, service and beer selection. Check the Connecticut Drummers Association website or Facebook Page for the next meeting date.
