Be sure to get there early enough on Saturday to see the Low Brow Boys, who are a wonderful old-time/folk/bluegrass trio who are all named Dan. Yes, really. Two of the Dans (Thompson and Spurr, on fiddle and banjo respectively) are from the Can Kickers, and they are joined by Dan Fram on guitar and vocals. These guys can really play, and you’ll love their vocal harmonies as well. The rest of the bands are a who’s who of local roots and americana music, with an out-of-town headliner each day.  Admission is $10 each day or $15 for a weekend pass. Food and drink are available, and all ages are welcome.

On Saturday night, after the Americana Festival has ended, take a ride over the bridge to Groton to see the Royale Brothers, Estrogen and Tonic, and Wrist Like This at the Backstage Rock Bar. The Backstage Rock Bar is a great venue that just happens to be next door to a strip club, Rose’s Cantina. Don’t let this stop you from checking out the music. You don’t have to go next door unless you want to! This music club has a staff who is in it for all the right reasons, and they always take good care of the bands. The Royale Brothers have recently re-formed with Mike Desmond on guitar, stepping into the slot left vacant by the devastating loss of Phil Agins, who passed away in 2008. They will be headlining the show, which also happens to be a CD release party for Estrogen and Tonic’s new release Project Involvement. Wrist Like This, whose lineup includes members of Fatal Film, Estrogen and Tonic, and other well-known New London bands past and present, will be rounding out the bill. This should be a great show.

Anne Castellano is a New London songwriter and musician who has played in several bands over the years (the Uninformed, the Skin Walkers, and the Cavities). She is currently performing as a solo artist but is planning on putting a band together very soon. In 2010 she released a full-length self-produced CD entitled “What’s Been Going On” on the New London-based Cosmodemonic Telegraph label. She is a 30-year veteran of college radio, and is currently doing the Deranged Radio Show on alternate Tuesday evenings from 6-9pm at WCNI 90.9 FM in New London. She grew up in New Fairfield, CT in a musical family, with a father who played guitar and listened to country artists such as Hank Williams and Patsy Cline, and a mother who loved Elvis Presley. Involvement in band and chorus in high school led to membership in the UCONN Marching Band and a two-week tour of Europe performing with the band in the early 1980s. Anne moved to New London in 1987 because of the vibrant local music scene there. In 2005 she began putting together a concert calendar to get the word out about all the local band shows that were taking place in the area. She enjoys books, animals, hiking, and the beach, and sees as much live music as her “day job” schedule permits.
