Anne’s Shore & More #7 – Sept 28, 2011

Anne’s Shore & More #7 – Sept 28, 2011

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE WEEK:
The Womack Family Band and Chris Castle return to the area this week from their native Ohio, and in their frequent visits they have become favorites of the New London music scene. I finally had a chance to see them the last time they were here, and found out what the excitement was all about. They are a really nice group of talented young musicians who write and perform music that seems to be beyond their years. They will be playing from Wednesday through Sunday at various local venues, including Sneekers Cafe and the Side Pocket Cafe, both in Groton, and the Oasis Pub in New London, so there will be many opportunities to see them perform. Singer/songwriter Chris Castle released two new CDs this summer, Of God and Man and the Firelands EP, and he plays both solo and with the Womacks. The Womack Family Band is touring to support their new EP From Chestnut. Would you believe that Chris Castle is originally from New London, Ohio? Maybe that’s why he likes our town so much.

On Saturday night, the Sinner’s Circle returns with Volume 14 at the Bean and Leaf in New London. This singer/songwriter showcase has continued to be  very popular and always draws a big crowd. The latest edition features four brand new sinners: Vince Tuckwood, Jake Carpenter (son of Original Sinner Jim Carpenter), Pat Daddona, and Marco Frucht. If the usual format continues, expect to see them perform their songs in the round, both solo and with contributions from the other Sinners, creating new and interesting musical chemistries. The Sinner’s Circle has led to several ongoing musical partnerships and it is fascinating to see how musicians from different genres can come together and work together so well. The show starts at 7:30 pm and ends at 9:30. Get there early if you want a seat!

Later that night, there’s an excellent 3-band bill at the Backstage Rock Bar in Groton, with the Suicide Dolls, Bedroom Rehab Corporation, and Burnouts From Outer Space. The Suicide Dolls have recently finished a full-length CD Prayers in Parking Lots which is planned for release in November, and you can hear a preview of 8 tracks from the album on their Bandcamp page here: http://thesuicidedolls.bandcamp.com/album/excerpts-from-prayers-in-parking-lots

It sounds great, and I can’t wait to hear the whole thing. They seem to have finally created a recording that does them justice and actually sounds like them. This album is long overdue, in my opinion, but should be worth the wait. Burnouts From Outer Space is relatively new on the scene and is fronted by local drummer Bobby Crash, so it will be interesting to see what these guys have been up to. Bedroom Rehab Corporation, a heavy”sludgy” bass/drum duo featuring the talented Meghan Killimade of WailingCity (http://www.wailingcity.com), has been around for a few years now, but they don’t play a lot of live shows. In fact none of these bands do, so it should be a great night. My youngest brother is getting married that day (Congratulations, Michael and Carol-Anne!), but I’m hoping to make it back into town in time to catch this show.

Anne Castellano is a New London songwriter and musician who has played in several bands over the years (the Uninformed, the Skin Walkers, and the Cavities). She is currently performing as a solo artist but is planning on putting a band together very soon. In 2010 she released a full-length self-produced CD entitled “What’s Been Going On” on the New London-based Cosmodemonic Telegraph label. She is a 30-year veteran of college radio, and is currently doing the Deranged Radio Show on alternate Tuesday evenings from 6-9pm at WCNI 90.9 FM in New London. She grew up in New Fairfield, CT in a musical family, with a father who played guitar and listened to country artists such as Hank Williams and Patsy Cline, and a mother who loved Elvis Presley. Involvement in band and chorus in high school led to membership in the UCONN Marching Band and a two-week tour of Europe performing with the band in the early 1980s. Anne moved to New London in 1987 because of the vibrant local music scene there. In 2005 she began putting together a concert calendar to get the word out about all the local band shows that were taking place in the area. She enjoys books, animals, hiking, and the beach, and sees as much live music as her “day job” schedule permits.
