Anne’s Shore & More #8 – Oct 5 2011

Anne’s Shore & More #8 – Oct 5 2011

Let me begin by pointing out that there are a LOT of good shows happening on Saturday night on the shoreline. You should try to go to all of them. (Just kidding…) First of all, the local Americana music series called the Blue Collar Happy Hour has a brand new home. The shows will now be taking place at the Side Pocket Cafe, located at 1066 Poquonnock Road in Groton. The really good news is that the owner of the club is a dedicated fan of the genre, the Happy Hour will be on both Friday and Saturday nights, and there are two equipped stages. The shows will start at 7pm with a singer songwriter, and the main artist will go on at 8pm. Kudos to Ken Atkins and Preston Frantz for keeping this excellent music series going for so long. I’ve been to some very enjoyable shows at both of the previous venues and I’m sure this will continue. Chris MacKay and the Tone Shifters, one of the newer area roots/americana bands, will be playing on Saturday, and they are definitely worth checking out.

The Knickerbocker Cafe in Westerly will be the site of the Phil Agins 4th Annual Berklee Scholarship Benefit, from 7-11:30pm on Saturday. This scholarship, created by Phil’s mother Paula Agins after Phil’s death in 2008, allows one student musician to attend the 5-week Berklee Summer Performance Program each year. Here is a link to information on the scholarship:

Performers at the benefit will be Daphne Lee Martin and Sandy Allen,  Zach Dustin & The Townees, the Amples, and Cougar Kick. The event will be all ages and admission is $10.

Also on Saturday night, Wrist Like This and Era Nocturna will be playing at the Copperwood Grill in New London. The Copperwood Grill located at the Whaling Wall on Eugene O’Neill Drive, and it combines an off-track betting parlor, a restaurant, and (evidently) also a bar with live music. It’s always great to have a new music venue in town, and this should be quite the eclectic bill. Wrist Like This (featuring local scene standbys Matt Potter, Todd Romanella, J. Kurt Curland, and Christian Moore) is a loud punk band, while Boston-based Era Nocturna describes themselves as “Dark electro alternative”. It should be an interesting combination of styles, to say the least. Era Nocturna has been around for years but hasn’t played in the area before. Local goth-rocker Dorian James has recently joined the band on guitar. The show starts at 9pm.

Finally, the Oasis Pub will have Brava Spectre, Child Abuse, and Doomsday Student. Doomsday Student is a new band from Providence consisting of Eric Paul, Stephen Mattos, Paul Vieira, and Craig Kureck of Arab on Radar and the Chinese Stars. That’s all I needed to know to decide that I had to be there. Bring earplugs. And due to the fact that this is at the Oasis, you should have time to check out one or two other shows before you get to this one.

Since I am a big Chinese Stars fan, I’ll share one of my favorite live videos of them:

Anne Castellano is a New London songwriter and musician who has played in several bands over the years (the Uninformed, the Skin Walkers, and the Cavities). She is currently performing as a solo artist but is planning on putting a band together very soon. In 2010 she released a full-length self-produced CD entitled “What’s Been Going On” on the New London-based Cosmodemonic Telegraph label. She is a 30-year veteran of college radio, and is currently doing the Deranged Radio Show on alternate Tuesday evenings from 6-9pm at WCNI 90.9 FM in New London. She grew up in New Fairfield, CT in a musical family, with a father who played guitar and listened to country artists such as Hank Williams and Patsy Cline, and a mother who loved Elvis Presley. Involvement in band and chorus in high school led to membership in the UCONN Marching Band and a two-week tour of Europe performing with the band in the early 1980s. Anne moved to New London in 1987 because of the vibrant local music scene there. In 2005 she began putting together a concert calendar to get the word out about all the local band shows that were taking place in the area. She enjoys books, animals, hiking, and the beach, and sees as much live music as her “day job” schedule permits.

  1. Bill Johnson says:

This is certainly some great information on this weekend’s upcoming events. Not sure why I got the email for the first time ever. But glad I’m on the mailling list now. Just wanted to mention one additional show on Saturday evening – 10/8. Pocket Vinyl is performing at the Bean & Leaf in New London. They are a new to the area duo comprised of pianist Eric Stevenson and his lovely wife and painter Elizabeth Jancewicz. They had a CD release party not too long ago at The Telegraph. Eric plays a set of songs (approximately 40 minutes in duration) while Elizabeth paints a picture on a canvas. A silent auction type event takes place during their performance and the high bidder at the end of the show buys the painting. I consider Eric’s playing to be along the lines of Billy Joel. He bangs out some original tunes and sings quite loud. I found their show quite entertaining. Again, they’ll be at the Bean & Leaf from 7-10 PM this Saturday.
But I really enjoyed the informative newsletter you wrote, Anne, with all this weekends events.

    Hi Anne,
Just wanted to let you know about a free show on Friday October 7 Blue Collar Happy Hour at the Side Pocket Cafe with Americana singer/songwriter Amy Black from Boston. She should be going on at 8 PM.

  3. Anne says:

Thanks Joe. If you check the concert calendar portion of my blog, you will see that I already had that show listed.
