Anne’s Shore & More #12 – Nov 2 2011

Anne’s Shore & More #12 – Nov 2 2011

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE WEEK
Yikes! What to do? All my favorite local americana bands are playing (in different towns, of course) on Friday night. I will be starting out the night (which happens to be a rare Friday night off for me) at the Gallery at the Wauregan in Norwich, where my friends Stephanie Johnson (check out her art at http://ravenseyrie.wordpress.com/ ) and Bart Jeczmienny are having an art opening from 6 to 9 pm. If you go to the Facebook event page, take a look at the image for the event. That’s the cover of my 2011 Cosmodemonic Telegraph CD single “Headache” (http://powers.bandcamp.com/track/headache),  that Stephanie created for me. I’m pretty sure it will be in the show. It’s me, sort of, after a rough night… I have never seen any of Bart’s artwork but I’m really looking forward to it. The gallery is located at 200 Main Street, and there will be wine and snacks available. If you can’t make it to the opening, the show will hang until December 3.

Also in Norwich that night, the Hoolios will be playing at the Donald Oat Theater beginning at 8pm. I see these guys as often as I can, so I am hoping to get there for a little while, but I may wind up in Groton at the Side Pocket Cafe, where the Rivergods are playing a Blue Collar Happy Hour show, with the MacLeans opening the show at 7 pm. I have been hoping to get to the Side Pocket since the Blue Collar Happy Hour moved there recently, so this is going to be a tough decision. It looks like the Hoolios will have Mike Palazzolo, who also plays bass for the Rivergods, and the Rivergods will have Mike Scott, who also plays in Superbald, on bass. Confused yet? It’s a common thing in our New London scene, where many of our musicians play in two or more bands.

A little farther down I-95, Dogbite will be at the Songbird Cafe at the Diane Birdsall Gallery in Old Lyme. (Diane is no relation to Hugh, in case you were wondering.)  This is a new local artist series to benefit Bring Our Music Back. The address is 16-A Lyme St. and the show is from 7 to 9 pm.

On Saturday night, the Black Noise Scam (from New Haven) will be having a CD release party at the Oasis Pub in New London. Their long-awaited new CD Sound the Alarm will be coming out on Die Hipster! presents. I hear it’s going to be a limited edition release so bring some cash and get your copy. Joining them will be the Cavemen Go, who are always a lot of fun, and New London area  ska/punks Chasing Trinity.

Sunday night, go see Slim Cessna’s Auto Club at the PVD Social Club in Providence if you can. Best live band ever. Trust me on this one.

Here’s a great clip of the Cavemen Go doing a cover of a Black Noise Scam song, from the last time the two bands played at the Oasis in New London:

Anne Castellano is a New London songwriter and musician who has played in several bands over the years (the Uninformed, the Skin Walkers, and the Cavities). She is currently performing as a solo artist but is planning on putting a band together very soon. In 2010 she released a full-length self-produced CD entitled “What’s Been Going On” on the New London-based Cosmodemonic Telegraph label. She is a 30-year veteran of college radio, and is currently doing the Deranged Radio Show on alternate Tuesday evenings from 6-9pm at WCNI 90.9 FM in New London. She grew up in New Fairfield, CT in a musical family, with a father who played guitar and listened to country artists such as Hank Williams and Patsy Cline, and a mother who loved Elvis Presley. Involvement in band and chorus in high school led to membership in the UCONN Marching Band and a two-week tour of Europe performing with the band in the early 1980s. Anne moved to New London in 1987 because of the vibrant local music scene there. In 2005 she began putting together a concert calendar to get the word out about all the local band shows that were taking place in the area. She enjoys books, animals, hiking, and the beach, and sees as much live music as her “day job” schedule permits.
