I first saw The Silent Comedy a couple years ago at the Sunset Strip Music Festival. The band came out and immediately reminded me of old time western style bartenders-vest,ties, and of course those ‘staches in all shapes, sizes and handle-barness- and I thought to myself “that’s a little gimmicky, interesting”. Okay, I have to admit, I’m not typically a fan of costumes and schticks, so I was pretty prepared to be let down. The Silent Comedy changed my views, they were AMAZING! Mixing what I can only describe as blues, gospel, and southern rock, these guys brought a whole lot of awesome! By the end of that show, fans and noobs alike were singing along, it was just that easy to do! So needless to say, a new fan left that night, and I couldn’t have been more excited when I found out they were going to be back in Los Angeles! And I was available to go?! I was ready for this!
I had never been to the Bootleg Theatre before, but I couldn’t pass up a chance to see a band like this in a bar with that name, just seemed like the perfect setting! The venue was small, with that “hey let’s buy a warehouse and make it a venue” type feel to it. The bar was pretty well stocked, there was merch, there was a small stage, and there were some interesting ceiling décor. It worked for the style of the night.
Now these San Diego based boys are multi-talented. There are keys, and guitars, drums, bangos and some things I’m not sure what they were. All I know is it makes for a GREAT band. I could definitely feel the excitment grow as they strategically placed and sound checked their gear. They played some tunes I knew, some I didn’t but I still enjoyed every note. They played songs about California, songs about drinking, and sprinkled in some Hallelujahs and Amens! When “The Well” started, all hell broke loose in what turned into a church type atmosphere. My feelings towards this song where echoed throughout the whole building! I felt like I was at the epicenter of some type of musical earthquake. There was stomping, and dancing, and clapping, and hands swaying in the air, it was phenomenal! These guys definitely know how to deliver, Can I get an AMEN?!?!
