Anne’s Shore & More #17 – Dec 7 2011

Anne’s Shore & More #17 – Dec 7 2011

Girls Guns and Glory (

will return to the CT shoreline this Friday night for a Blue Collar Happy Hour show at the Side Pocket Cafe in Groton. Even though they have played in the area many times, I have only managed to catch them live once, and I had to leave that show after a few songs because of an early work shift the next day. Suffice it to say, I am looking forward to finally seeing an entire set from these guys. Their fourth album Sweet Nothings is quite good, and they recently won Americana Artist of the Year at the 2011 Boston Music Awards. The show starts at 7pm with the MacLeans, and Girls Guns and Glory will play at 8pm. There is no cover for any of the Blue Collar Happy Hour shows.

New London’s Reducers ( will be doing an out of town gig at the Arch Street Tavern in Hartford on Saturday along with the Manchurians ( and Sidewalk Dave. I hear that the club will be the last stop for the SantaCon 2011 pub crawl (which I’m sure you will hear ALL about in lsg’s blog, but go and experience it for yourself!) and the show will also be taped for Chip McCabe’s Live and Local TV program to to air on WCCT TV in January. It sounds like a lot of fun, and you know the music will be great with that lineup of bands. You’ll also get to hear the Reducers do “Nothing For Christmas”, and there may even be a Christmas medley from the Manchurians. The show starts at 9 pm.

Back in New London, on Saturday night the Suicide Dolls ( will be releasing their long-awaited album Prayers in Parking Lots, recorded by Justin Pizzoferrato (Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr, The Hold Steady). The CD release show will be a 4-band bill, with the Everymen (from New Jersey), Wrist Like This (New Londoners Matt Potter, J Curland, Todd Romanella, and Christian Moore), and Speak! (a band from MA who are on Frank Black’s new record label). Although the show is happening at the notoriously late-starting Oasis Pub, the start time is being advertised as 9:30 pm, so get there early if you don’t want to miss anyone. CDs will be available at the show for $5. The Suicide Dolls were recently picked by Verbicide Magazine as one of the best unsigned alternative bands in the country. You can cast your vote for them by following this link:

Anne Castellano is a New London songwriter and musician who has played in several bands over the years (the Uninformed, the Skin Walkers, and the Cavities). She is currently performing as a solo artist but is planning on putting a band together very soon. In 2010 she released a full-length self-produced CD entitled “What’s Been Going On” on the New London-based Cosmodemonic Telegraph label. She is a 30-year veteran of college radio, and is currently doing the Deranged Radio Show on alternate Tuesday evenings from 6-9pm at WCNI 90.9 FM in New London. She grew up in New Fairfield, CT in a musical family, with a father who played guitar and listened to country artists such as Hank Williams and Patsy Cline, and a mother who loved Elvis Presley. Involvement in band and chorus in high school led to membership in the UCONN Marching Band and a two-week tour of Europe performing with the band in the early 1980s. Anne moved to New London in 1987 because of the vibrant local music scene there. In 2005 she began putting together a concert calendar to get the word out about all the local band shows that were taking place in the area. She enjoys books, animals, hiking, and the beach, and sees as much live music as her “day job” schedule permits.
