Anne’s Shore & More #18 – Dec 14 2011

Anne’s Shore & More #18 – Dec 14 2011

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE WEEK
Usually the show schedule starts to quiet down this time of year, but that doesn’t seem to be happening yet. With the holidays rapidly approaching, the concert calendar is as busy as ever. On Friday night at the Side Pocket Cafe in Groton, the Blue Collar Happy Hour presents the Mallett Brothers (http://mallettbrothersband.com/) , from Portland, Maine. This alt-country band has released two CDs on Bull Moose Music (great name!), with the most recent being the 2011 album Low Down. I listened to a couple of songs on their website, and my first impression was that they reminded me of Quiet Life (a New London band that has relocated to Portland, OR). It could just be that they share a similar energy. Anyhow, I think it’s going to be a great show, and as much as I love my local scene, it’s always a treat to see a good out-of-town band. We need to be reminded of what else is going on “out there” once in awhile. It helps keep things in their proper perspective. Roy Dunn MacLean will be opening the show at 7:00. No word yet on whether his lovely and talented twin daughters will join him this week. (We don’t know about Uncle Jimmy and Cousin Corina either, for that matter…) There is no cover.

Saturday night will be a busy one in New London. The Telegraph (http://telegraphnl.com/) is having their Holiday Party beginning at 5 pm, with entertainment by Skobie Won, Dave Hogan, Gary T S Brooks, Pete Andersen, Princess Chords (a new Matt Potter project, if I heard correctly), Dayne Duranti, Matt Gouette, and the WTO Dance Crew. BYOB, and bring a mix CD of your holiday favorites to trade. These events are always a lot of fun. They will have snacks and specials.

The Rivergods (http://therivergods.wordpress.com/) will be doing their annual Holiday Show at the Bean and Leaf in New London on Saturday at 7:30 pm. They have invited me (www.reverbnation.com/annecastellano) and my good friend Hugh Birdsall (from the Reducers www.thereducers.com and Dogbite https://www.facebook.com/pages/Dogbite-Band/108188045904888) to do an opening set, since we have been writing and recording some songs together recently. Here is the plan so far: I will play two of my songs, Hugh will play two of his songs, and we will do four songs together. So far we are sounding quite good, and I think people may be surprised. Of course, you never know! Haha! We’ll be going on at 7:30, followed by a 1-1/2 hour set from the Rivergods, which will also include some special guests (including the aforementioned opening act). I believe that Nancy Parent (http://nancyparent.wordpress.com/) will also be performing a few songs from her forthcoming solo album Vision of Angels. This is always a fun show, played semi-acoustic, and has become one of my favorite traditions of the holiday season. There is no cover charge, but donations will be accepted. Bean and Leaf closes at 10 pm so you will  have time to go to another show afterward. You might even hear a Christmas song or two. And my boss gave me the day off, so I will have lots of time to get nervous beforehand…

Here is the Mallett Brothers’ video of “Low Down”. This song has lodged itself in my brain and refuses to leave.

Anne Castellano is a New London songwriter and musician who has played in several bands over the years (the Uninformed, the Skin Walkers, and the Cavities). She is currently performing as a solo artist but is planning on putting a band together very soon. In 2010 she released a full-length self-produced CD entitled “What’s Been Going On” on the New London-based Cosmodemonic Telegraph label. She is a 30-year veteran of college radio, and is currently doing the Deranged Radio Show on alternate Tuesday evenings from 6-9pm at WCNI 90.9 FM in New London. She grew up in New Fairfield, CT in a musical family, with a father who played guitar and listened to country artists such as Hank Williams and Patsy Cline, and a mother who loved Elvis Presley. Involvement in band and chorus in high school led to membership in the UCONN Marching Band and a two-week tour of Europe performing with the band in the early 1980s. Anne moved to New London in 1987 because of the vibrant local music scene there. In 2005 she began putting together a concert calendar to get the word out about all the local band shows that were taking place in the area. She enjoys books, animals, hiking, and the beach, and sees as much live music as her “day job” schedule permits.
