RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE WEEK
There is plenty to do this weekend in the New London area, beginning on Thursday night (OK, not the weekend, but close…) with the Village Jammers (http://www.reverbnation.com/villagejammers) playing their monthly gig under the moose at Sneekers Cafe in Groton. I finally had a chance to see these guys a couple of months ago and really enjoyed their set. Great songs, talented players, and no cover. Show starts around 7:00 pm.
On Friday night, the Blue Collar Happy Hour will present Ken Atkins and the Honky Tonk Kind (http://www.kenatkins.com/) at the Side Pocket Cafe in Groton. Roy Dunn MacLean will be performing solo in the opening slot at 7:00 pm. There will be plenty of good old-time country and honky-tonk, and there is no cover charge.
Across the bridge in New London, psychedelic/r&b trio the Stepkids (http://thestepkidsband.com/) will be making a rare local appearance at the Oasis Pub, along with the Weird Beards (http://weirdusbeardus.wordpress.com/) and Sketch The Cataclysm (http://www.sketchtc.com/). Show time is listed as 9:00 pm, but shows at the O usually get started quite a bit later than that. You can be sure this one will be packed, so get there early and find a place to stand…
And if that weren’t enough for one night, the Lemonheads (http://www.thelemonheads.net/) will be at the Mohegan Sun Wolf Den in Uncasville on Friday night. The band was on hiatus from 1998-2004, and re-formed in 2005. This looks like their only appearance in the Connecticut area. The show starts at 8:00 and is free. Get there early if you want to get in!
On Saturday night, local americana favorites the Rivergods (http://therivergods.wordpress.com/) will be opening for Freedy Johnston at the Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center (the Kate) in Old Saybrook. Here’s a link to the theater’s event listing for the show: http://www.katharinehepburntheater.org/blog/events/event-details/?EventsID=548 . Tickets are $20 and the show starts at 8:00 pm. Congratulations to the Rivergods for getting on this bill! What a great opportunity.
In New London, Wrist Like This (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Wrist-Like-This/103543909732061) , the Low Brow Boys (http://www.reverbnation.com/lowbrowboys) , and We Got Mouths will be doing a show at 33 Golden Street at 9pm. 33 Golden is the new club recently opened by Gene Barousse, formerly of the Bank Street Cafe and Stash’s, and it’s great to see another New London venue booking bands. I’m not sure who We Got Mouths is, but I am assuming it’s a new local band. The combination of Wrist Like This and the Low Brow Boys is certainly a study in contrasts, with the former playing hardcore and the latter doing folk and oldtime tunes. New London has a little something for everyone.
Here’s a clip of the Low Brow Boys performing at the Pigeon Hole Gallery in New London:

how about covering southwestern connecticut too? And you can check out my page at http://www.reverbnation.com/janicelallaland
I cover as much as I can, but I simply do not have the time and resources to cover the entire state. I try to concentrate on what I know best, which is the area that I live in. Thanks for reading.
