Anne’s Shore & More #36 – April 18 2012

Anne’s Shore & More #36 – April 18 2012

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE WEEK

The good news is that there are a lot of good shows to choose from on Friday night. You can probably even go to more than one, but chances are you’re going to wish you were at all of them. (If you find a way to do that, let me know!) First of all, Ken Atkins and the Honky Tonk Kind (sorry, not Chris MacKay and the Tone Shifters – my bad…) (www.kenatkins.com) are playing at the Blue Collar Happy Hour show at the Side Pocket Cafe in Groton.  I really enjoyed their last show there, and it was great to actually see Ken playing a Les Paul after breaking a string on his trusty Telecaster. The new songs were really good, and I especially liked “Teardrops Fall” (I’m pretty sure that’s the title). Love that minor key Honky Tonk! Roy Dunn MacLean opens the show at 7 pm, and the Honky Tonk Kind play at 8 pm. There is no cover, and the kitchen is open.

Across town at Sneekers Cafe in Groton, the Rivergods (www.therivergods.com) will be playing on the big moose stage. The band has some new songs, including my favorite, “The Curse”, which they played at the recent Good Sponge Sampler CD Release show (see the video below). The show starts at 8 pm, the band plays until 11:30, and there is no cover. Sneekers has earned a reputation for great food. The Rivergods will also be playing next Saturday April 28 at the Daffodil Festival in Meriden. They have the 5:45 pm time slot on the Bandshell Stage, right before headliners Barefoot Truth. More about the Daffodil Festival next week.

On Friday in New London, the Weird Beards will be playing an album release show at the Oasis Pub. The album is called  A.D.E.D. (all.day.every.day.) It’s also the Weird Beards’ 5th anniversary, and if that isn’t enough, it’s also 4/20. The Beards suggest that you wear your best plaid and get weird. They will debut the album and show their new music video “Cream Puff Powder Man”, which was directed by Andrew Proctor. It’s not clear from the Facebook event (https://www.facebook.com/events/280143858734417/) whether  the album will be for sale at the show. You can “like” the band’s Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/theweirdbeards) for updates. Admission is $5 and the start time is listed at 9 pm, but I’d bet they go on a bit later than that.

Around the corner at 33 Golden Street, Fatal Film (http://fatalfilm.com/), Estrogen and Tonic (http://www.myspace.com/estrogenandtonic), and Fox Run (https://www.facebook.com/FoxRunMusic) will be playing. Fatal Film and Estrogen and Tonic are two of the New London bands that have been around the longest. Estrogen and Tonic has actually been playing for over 15 years! And I remember one of Fatal Film’s early shows, when they played a show at the Bulkeley House during Hygienic weekend as a two-piece (guitar and drums). Their first album, Video Bowling, came out in 2005. In contrast, Fox Run has only been around since November 2011. Speaking of newcomers, 33 Golden Street is a fairly new club that has quickly earned a reputation as a great place to see a show. Owners Gene and Jeff have done a nice job creating a very comfortable atmosphere here. Cover is $5 and the show starts around 10 pm.

The Sue Menhart Band (www.suemenhart.com) will be playing at Burke’s Tavern in Niantic on Friday night. They were crowd favorites at the Good Sponge CD release, and Sue also played a well-received solo set at the SWAN Day festival in Hartford earlier in the evening. The show starts at 8 pm and there is no cover. No word yet whether they’ve managed to clone Dan Spano, who plays keyboards for both the Rivergods and the Sue Menhart Band.

Here are the Rivergods performing “The Curse” at the Rose Barn Theater on March 31:

Anne Castellano is a New London songwriter and musician who has played in several bands over the years (the Uninformed, the Skin Walkers, and the Cavities). She has been performing as a solo artist since 2007 but is currently rehearsing with her new band  Anne Castellano and the Smoke.

In 2010 she released a full-length self-produced CD entitled “What’s Been Going On” on the New London-based Cosmodemonic Telegraph label. She is a 30-year veteran of college radio, and is currently doing the Deranged Radio Show on alternate Tuesday evenings from 6-9pm at WCNI 90.9 FM in New London.

She grew up in New Fairfield, CT in a musical family, with a father who played guitar and listened to country artists such as Hank Williams and Patsy Cline, and a mother who loved Elvis Presley. Involvement in band and chorus in high school led to membership in the UCONN Marching Band and a two-week tour of Europe performing with the band in the early 1980s.

Anne moved to New London in 1987 because of the vibrant local music scene there. In 2005 she began putting together a concert calendar to get the word out about all the local band shows that were taking place in the area. She enjoys books, animals, hiking, and the beach, and sees as much live original music as her “day job” schedule permits.
