Almost Ancient

Almost Ancient at Bar 2421, Berlin CT

So let’s get back to my original quote.  What a blast we had Saturday night.  Mike and I met up at Bar 2421 to check out Almost Ancient.  Now, some of you may know, but I am partial to original bands so I don’t see cover bands often.  Let me tell you this…I’d go see Almost Ancient again and suggest you see them too.  Damn can those dudes play some serious classic rock tunes.  And…to my surprise, Bar 2421 is an awesome place to check out a band.  Newly renovated, the venue boasts a huge bar, many tables set up cabaret style, and a phenomenal stage with fantastic sound.  I highly recommend.  From there, we moved down the road to Center Station in Berlin where we caught our friends, Bandwith Karaoke.  And yeah, shit got weird.  Suffices to say that by the end of the evening, there was a woman climbing a structural pole to the ceiling and swinging!  (No.  It wasn’t me!)  Kudos to owner, Keith for another hellacious karaoke night at his bar capped by his own mini-concert!  Boy can rock out!!!  Have you joined the band yet on FB

Anne Castellano & The Smoke

Anne Castellano

The band was formed in December 2011 after nearly 5 years of my playing solo with my drum machine. Rob DeRosa invited me to play the Daffodil Festival and asked if I would be able to put a band together, so I decided to do that. Local Brit Vince Tuckwood expressed interest in joining, and after hearing him sit in on lead guitar with the Rivergods a few times I jumped at the chance to have him in the band on lead guitar. Vince is also a singer/songwriter and published author. We’re hoping to get him to do some backing vocals soon. I asked my brother Tony Castellano if he would be interested in playing drums. Tony is a talented musician who has put out his own CDs of music where he writes, sings, and plays all the instruments himself, so even though I had never heard him play drums I knew he would do a good job (and I was right!). Tony and I  last played in a band together when we were both in high school (we had a cover band called Spellbinder with a few of our friends). I then asked Dorian James to play bass. Dorian and I have played together in bands since the mid-1980s, first in the Uninformed and later in the Skin Walkers, and I also played with his band Dorian James and the Brood a few times. Dorian still writes and plays his own songs in bands such as Anodyne X and November Party. We’ve been rehearsing a 14-song set for the last 4 months. The band had a great debut at the Good Sponge CD release on March 31st and are looking forward to playing the Daffodil Festival!

The Foresters

The Foresters

The Foresters are a power pop trio consisting of 3 brothers: Evan 12 – Guitar and Lead vocals, Hayden 10 – Bass & vocals and Liam 9 – Drums. The brothers bought their own instruments in the fall of 2010 and have worked very hard to hone their craft. They play gigs where ever and when ever they can and have started to see success from their hard work with recent shows at Toads Place, The Space, The Amity Teen Center and were recently booked as the youngest band to ever perform at the Meriden Daffodil Festival. They also recently appeared on the pilot for the television show Lifestyles of the Young and Fabulous where they performed in front of a live studio audience. The crowd loved them so much that they lined up to get their autographs for over 30 minutes. The Foresters have written nearly 20 original songs and are working on raising money through MeritBooster.com to record their first EP.

Mark Mirando

Mark Mirando

Mark Mirando started his music career in New Haven Connecticut playing in the legendary “Dogs”, a group that was well know for their originals as well as carefully chosen, well crafted covers.  Mark concentrates on original music now, although he’ll pull out a Beatles gem on occasion – and he’s recorded with no less than Beatle Ringo Starr.   Mark played guitar and sang backup vocals on Ringo’s more recent releases, “Ringo-Rama”, “Choose Love”, and two of Ringo’s greatest hits CD’s, “Photograph” and “Ringo 5.1″.  Mark performs the east coast singer songwriter circuit working both solo and also with his band. He also travels to Nashville to write, record and perform with Nashville’s top songwriters including Georgia Middleman and Ct’s own Gary Burr.  He has recently been collaborating with up and coming artists “Stealing Angels”  and Lila James.  Mark’s latest CD is titled “Now That You Mention It” and  it features such guest artist as Gary Burr, Georgia Middleman, Jim Photoglo, Victoria Shaw and Stealing Angels (Caroline Cutbirth, Jennifer Wayne, Tayla Lynn).  One of Mark’s song’s, “What More Do You Want?” was recorded by Kristin Chenoweth and was released on her new cd titled “Some Lessons Learned.”

Lisa Sanchez Gonzalez – lsg Original

Lover of music and the visual arts, Lisa Sanchez Gonzalez is the insanity behind lsg original photography. lsg specializes in artist and performer photography. She’s had the honor of photographing national bands such as Weezer, Snoop Dogg, A Simple Plan, Paramore, Whitesnake, Wye Oak, and The Antlers along with countless local bands and performers.

Hailing from Hartford, CT, Lisa is a life- long music connoisseur. Growing up, her mother exposed her to everything from The Stones to Simon and Garfunkel to Earth, Wind, and Fire to Loretta Lynn…and everything in between. No genre was left unexplored in her vinyl collection. She saw her first concert at 14…Rod Stewart at the (then called) Hartford Civic Center. Thirty years later, it’s still her favorite pastime.

Lisa has two kids (grown!) and a day job. Her loves of music and photography have melded into a second career. And her love of CT keeps her promoting and pushing for local artists and performers. Lisa spends the greater part of her free time seeing and shooting live bands, performers, and artists and art work…and purchasing vinyl!

Thanks, Lisa! One correction: that isn’t a photo of Anne Castellano and the Smoke. That is a photo of me doing a guest vocal with Dogbite, Hugh Birdsall’s band, at the Good Sponge CD release show.
