Anne’s Shore & More #42 – May 30 2012

Anne’s Shore & More #42 – May 30 2012

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE WEEK

On Friday night, a New London tradition returns when the Commoner hosts another Hoot For Hunger to benefit the New London Community Meal Center (http://nlcommunitymealcenter.org/). These Hoots have been taking place for several years now, featuring many of the area’s best acoustic artists in an assortment of local venues to raise money for charity. I’ve always enjoyed going to these, but often couldn’t hear or see well in the small overcrowded rooms. That’s why It will be nice to see these performers in a more open, comfortable place when they play at the Commoner. I don’t know the exact order of performers, but here’s a list of who will be playing: Hugh Birdsall (www.thereducers.com) , Noah Feldman, Ned Ruete, Charlie Reyburn, Sue Menhart (www.suemenhart.com), Dirt Road Radio (http://www.dirtroadradio.net), Sue Mead, Golden Ratio, Woody, Gaetano Patalano, and the Crew. The music will start at 8:30 pm. There is no cover, but donations will be accepted for the New London Community Meal Center.

On Saturday, four of New London’s roots/Americana bands will be playing at “Bisque Fest” at Captain Scott’s Lobster Dock (http://captscotts.com/) in New London. The music starts at 1 pm with the Paul Brockett Roadshow (http://www.paulbrockettroadshow.com/). Daphne Lee Martin & Raise the Rent (http://raisetherentmusic.com/) will follow at 3 pm, then John Fries and the Heat (www.johmfriesmusic.com) at 5 pm and the Hoolios (www.locodare.com) at 7 pm. If I remember correctly, there was a similar event here last year. It’s an outdoor gig, so hopefully the weather will cooperate. Paul Brockett Roadshow hasn’t played in a long time (I think since fall?), so this will be a rare opportunity to see them. I’ve heard the food is good, but I’m a vegetarian, so I think I’ll eat before I go. You’ll probably want to bring an appetite! Judging from photos I’ve seen, this should be a really enjoyable way to spend the day. Captain Scott’s is located at 80 Hamilton Street. The show is free and all ages.

There will be another chance to see the Paul Brockett Roadshow when they play at halftime of the Shoreline Roller Derby (http://www.shorelinerollerderby.com/drupal/) bout at the Galaxy Roller Rink in Groton on Sunday night. Doors open at 6 pm, and the bout begins at 7 pm. Admission is $10 in advance, $12 at the door (cash only). Kids under 10 get in free.   Advance tickets are available here: http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/234390 . You will need to bring a chair. Gone For Good were originally scheduled to play, but they had to cancel because of an injury. Shoreline Roller Derby is Shoreline Roller Derby is a new all women’s flat track roller derby league based in Southeastern Connecticut that just began bouting recently. This is only their second home bout, and the teams who will be playing are the Steam Queens and Burlesque Bruisers.

Anne Castellano is a New London songwriter and musician who has played in several bands over the years (the Uninformed, the Skin Walkers, and the Cavities). She has been performing as a solo artist since 2007 but is currently rehearsing with her new band  Anne Castellano and the Smoke.

In 2010 she released a full-length self-produced CD entitled “What’s Been Going On” on the New London-based Cosmodemonic Telegraph label. She is a 30-year veteran of college radio, and is currently doing the Deranged Radio Show on alternate Tuesday evenings from 6-9pm at WCNI 90.9 FM in New London.

She grew up in New Fairfield, CT in a musical family, with a father who played guitar and listened to country artists such as Hank Williams and Patsy Cline, and a mother who loved Elvis Presley. Involvement in band and chorus in high school led to membership in the UCONN Marching Band and a two-week tour of Europe performing with the band in the early 1980s.

Anne moved to New London in 1987 because of the vibrant local music scene there. In 2005 she began putting together a concert calendar to get the word out about all the local band shows that were taking place in the area. She enjoys books, animals, hiking, and the beach, and sees as much live original music as her “day job” schedule permits.
