RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE WEEK
The weekend starts on Thursday, when 33 Golden Street in New London hosts the Full Moon Jamboree, with well-known local musicians Paul Brockett, Dave Anderson (bass), Tim O’Connor (drums and/or mandolin), and Joey Royale playing old-school classic country tunes. This sounds like a great evening, especially since that’s the music I grew up listening to. I’m not sure what time the show starts, as the flyer simply lists “Night Time”, and cover charge is unknown. But I’m really looking forward to this.
There are quite a few shows in New London on Friday night, with the Oasis, 33 Golden, and the El ‘n’ Gee all hosting bands. At the Oasis Pub, Boston indie-pop band Pretty & Nice (http://prettyandnice.com/) will be be playing, along with New Haven’s The Cavemen Go (http://www.thecavemengo.com/). Keyboardist/vocalist Emily McMinn is leaving The Cavemen Go for good, and this will be her last show with the band. The band has been around since 2002, and their shows are always a lot of fun. Pretty & Nice have been to the Oasis multiple times and are also crowd favorite. Cover is $5.
At 33 Golden Street, you can see Anodyne X (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Anodyne-X/218002931550792) and Street People. Anodyne X is Dorian James’ latest band, and it’s a trio with Phil Barello and Scott Lana. Street People is one of Matt Potter’s many musical projects, this one includes Sebastian Coppotelli (Fatal Film) and Jared Horner (Electric Noise Act). 33 Golden has been booking a lot of bands lately, which is a very good thing. It’s so nice to have Gene doing this again, because he has excellent taste in music and always brings talented musicians to town. The show starts at 9:30 pm.
Over at the El ‘n’ Gee, it’s the Weird Beards (http://www.theweirdbeards.com/) and Resident Alien. The Weird Beards are definitely one of the most fun New London bands. You can never be sure what they will come up with or who might be joining them to play for the night. Their appearance as marionettes at this year’s Whalie Awards was amazing. The show is all ages, with a $5 cover for over 21 and $8 for under 21. Start time is 7 pm.
Also on Friday, Lauren Agnelli (http://www.myspace.com/laurenagnelli) and Nancy Parent (www.nancyparent.wordpress.com/ ), along with Matt Male & Dana Takaki (violin), will be playing at the Songbird Cafe, which has a new location at 68 Lyme Street in Old Lyme. The music will start around 7 pm, and they will play two sets and continue until 9 pm. It’s all acoustic, and there are sweets for sale along with coffee, tea, and iced drinks. Cover is $5.
Don’t worry, there’s still plenty going on Saturday night. The Rivergods (www.therivergods.com/) , along with Carl and Jay Franklin (of the Franklin Brothers and PWOP Studios: www.pwop.com) will be playing at the Summer Pops concert at Wilcox Park in Westerly. The show starts at 6:30 pm, and the Chorus of Westerly will perform from 8 to 10:30 pm. This event is free and open to all. The show will involve the closing of streets and there will be parking restrictions as well as many rules about what is allowed in the park. Check the Facebook event for all the details before you go, because this sounds huge: https://www.facebook.com/events/103512656420458/
Rain dates are June 24 and 25. The Rivergods recently posted a video clip showing them rehearsing with Carl and Jay Franklin on one of the Franklin Brothers’ songs. If you watch it, you will definitely want to go to the show. Try this link: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=628224815412.
Also on Saturday night, Vince Thompson and friends (www.reverbnation.com/vincethompson) will be at Burke’s Tavern in Niantic. Vince will have Andy Solberg on guitar and vocals, Lou Bocciarelli on upright bass, Steve Peck on drums, and Bob Metzger on pedal steel. They will play from 8 pm to midnight. Vince is one of those artists (along with his brother Curtiss and his band the Village Jammers) that I just never get a chance to see, even though he plays out fairly often. I caught part of Vince’s set at the Side Pocket Cafe during one of the Blue Collar Happy Hour shows, and I really liked what I heard, but I can’t make it to this show because of work. I’ll get there of these nights for sure!
