Anne’s Shore & More #46 – June 27 2012

Anne’s Shore & More #46 – June 27 2012

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE WEEK

I’ll be on vacation for the next two weekends, and I’m happy to say that there are a lot of good shows coming up during that time. This Thursday night (first night of vacation!) it looks like I will finally get a chance to check out Vince Thompson and friends (http://www.reverbnation.com/vincethompson) at the Steak Loft in Mystic. Vince will have Andy Solberg on guitar, Rory McLeod (formerly with Jack Smith and the Rockabilly Planet) on upright bass, and Bart Lingley (who used to tour with the Dixie Chicks) on drums. The show is from 7 to 10 pm and there is no cover.

Also on Thursday night, Sandman and friends (http://www.sandmanmusic.net/) will be playing at Sneekers Cafe in Groton. This show is also from 7 to 10 pm and there’s no cover. Hmm, maybe I can catch some of this also.

Friday night will be a bit tricky, with two really good shows happening in New London, both on Bank Street, about 1/2 mile away from each other. Gone For Good (https://www.facebook.com/wearegoneforgood) will be doing their last show ever at the Oasis Pub (bassist Ryan Perkins is moving to Hawaii), and this show will also be a record release for their new album Marvelous Liar.  Also on the bill are their practice space roomies Recur Occurrence (http://www.myspace.com/recuroccurrence) and Bedroom Rehab Corporation (http://www.bedroomrehabcorp.com/). Shows tend to start late at the Oasis, but they are saying this one will start “early” at 9:30 pm. Cover is $5 and there will be download cards for Gone For Good’s new album available.  Go see them before they are…well, you know…(sorry, couldn’t resist).

Down the street at the Bank Street Cafe, there’s a quadruple bill with Dirt Road Radio (http://www.reverbnation.com/dirtroadradio), Johnson’s Crossroad (http://johnsonscrossroad.com/fr_home.cfm), Daphne Lee Martin (http://raisetherentmusic.com), and Ben Parent (of the Rivergods, playing solo). If you read those names in reverse order, I believe that will be the order of bands for the show. The Facebook event lists the start time as 9 pm. Cover at the Bank Street Cafe has been $6, and first drink is free with admission. I hear Dirt Road Radio will have a rhythm section for this show, and I’m really looking forward to hearing them as a full band. It should be easy enough to catch some of both shows on Friday, and you might be able to catch the end of the show at the Oasis after the Bank Street Cafe show ends, unless they really do start early at the Oasis… Like I said, it will be tricky. But you can’t go wrong with so much good music happening at both clubs.

‘Tis the season for outdoor shows, and on Saturday night the Rivergods (http://therivergods.wordpress.com/) will be playing outdoors at Captain Scott’s Lobster Dock in New London from 6 to 9 pm. Captain Scott’s is located at the end of Hamilton Street, which is the unmarked street off Howard Street. Hopefully the weather will be nice, but the band plays under the pavilion, so the show will take place rain or shine. All ages are welcome, it’s free, and you can BYOB. I’m a vegetarian, but I hear the seafood is excellent, and they have ice cream too.

Also on Saturday night, there’s a show at the Chester Meeting House (4 Liberty Street in Chester, CT) with folk/americana band Amalgamated Muck (http://www.reverbnation.com/amalgamatedmuck) and Arieb Azhar (http://www.ariebazhar.com/php/home.php), a folk artist from Islamabad, Pakistan who is doing a month-long tour of the northeast with a four-piece band as part of the U.S. Department of State’s Cultural Exchange Program. The show is sponsored by the New England Foundation for the Arts (NEFA), and will show the commonality of both cultures through music. The bands will trade songs back and forth on stage. Tickets are $10 at the door, and the show will start at 7 pm. More details are available on the Facebook event page: https://www.facebook.com/events/220143658095382/

Anne Castellano is a New London songwriter and musician who has played in several bands over the years (the Uninformed, the Skin Walkers, and the Cavities). She has been performing as a solo artist since 2007 but is currently rehearsing with her new band  Anne Castellano and the Smoke.

In 2010 she released a full-length self-produced CD entitled “What’s Been Going On” on the New London-based Cosmodemonic Telegraph label. She is a 30-year veteran of college radio, and is currently doing the Deranged Radio Show on alternate Tuesday evenings from 6-9pm at WCNI 90.9 FM in New London.

She grew up in New Fairfield, CT in a musical family, with a father who played guitar and listened to country artists such as Hank Williams and Patsy Cline, and a mother who loved Elvis Presley. Involvement in band and chorus in high school led to membership in the UCONN Marching Band and a two-week tour of Europe performing with the band in the early 1980s.

Anne moved to New London in 1987 because of the vibrant local music scene there. In 2005 she began putting together a concert calendar to get the word out about all the local band shows that were taking place in the area. She enjoys books, animals, hiking, and the beach, and sees as much live original music as her “day job” schedule permits.
