Anne’s Shore & More #48 – July 12 2012

Anne’s Shore & More #48 – July 12 2012

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE WEEK

Things are back to normal (whatever that is!) in New London after a busy Sailfest/OpSail weekend, but there are still some good shows to go to. On Friday night there is a hardcore show at the El ‘n’ Gee Club  in New London, with five bands and one more TBA. These Furious Days (https://www.facebook.com/pages/These-Furious-Days/10324568979291), Live Fast Die Fast (https://www.facebook.com/LFDFofficial), Penalty Kill (http://www.facebook.com/pkbhc), L.A. Trash (https://www.facebook.com/latrashpunk), and the Dipshits (www.facebook.com/thedipshits )will all be playing. The show is all ages with a $6 cover, and doors open at 7. As a side note, congratulations are in order for promoter Joaquin Gouin and club owner Katie Gear, who were married recently.

The Sue Menhart Band (www.suemenhart.com) will be at Burke’s Tavern in Niantic on Friday night. Sue and her band sounded great on the pier at Sailfest this past weekend. It’s been awhile since I was at Burke’s, but it’s good to see that some of the bands who used to play for the Blue Collar Happy Hour shows are still booking gigs there from time to time.  The show starts at 8 pm and I am pretty sure there’s no cover charge.

Also on Friday night, Dirt Road Radio is at the High Noon Saloon in Norwich, along with Good People and Michael James Anderson (http://www.reverbnation.com/mikeandersonct). Folk/roots trio Dirt Road Radio (http://dirtroadradio.wordpress.com/) will play this show as a trio, but you’ll have a chance to see them with their rhythm section of Nick Toscano on drums and Ben Parent on bass when they play the North Stonington Agricultural Fair on Sunday afternoon. I wasn’t able to find any information on Good People, but according to his ReverbNation page, Michael James Anderson is working on his second solo acoustic record. He also continues to play with his bands Flu and the And Band. The show starts at 8 pm and cover is $5.

Speaking of the North Stonington Fair (http://www.northstoningtonfair.org/), there will be two other local bands playing there this weekend. You can see Ken Atkins and the Honky Tonk Kind (www.kenatkins.com) at the fair on Saturday for two shows, at 1 pm and 5:30 pm. Ken says they will be playing in the shade behind the chickens and sheep. The website calls it “Stage 2″.On Sunday, Dirt Road Radio and the Rivergods (http://therivergods.wordpress.com/) will be playing on Stage 1 (which is probably not behind the chickens and sheep, but may be in the shade) from 12-4 pm. Admission to the fair, which is on Wyassup Road, is $8 for adults. Kids under 12 get in free.

There’s a big show at the Hygienic Art Park on Saturday, with the alt-country/honky tonk Jack Grace Band (http://jackgrace.com/html/news.html, from New York City) returning for a show with New Haven’s folk-country band Elison Jackson (http://elisonjackson.com/) and Pocket Vinyl (http://pocketvinyl.com/), a power-pop band from New London. The show starts at 7 pm, and all ages are welcome at the Art Park. Admission is by suggested donation, with proceeds going toward funding of events at the park. Beer and wine are available for purchase.

Here is Dirt Road Radio at the Rose Barn Theater for the Good Sponge CD Release show. (I was there, but didn’t get a chance to watch them because my band was frantically setting up on the other stage while they played. This song seemed much shorter that night!):

Anne Castellano is a New London songwriter and musician who has played in several bands over the years (the Uninformed, the Skin Walkers, and the Cavities). She has been performing as a solo artist since 2007 but is currently rehearsing with her new band  Anne Castellano and the Smoke.

In 2010 she released a full-length self-produced CD entitled “What’s Been Going On” on the New London-based Cosmodemonic Telegraph label. She is a 30-year veteran of college radio, and is currently doing the Deranged Radio Show on alternate Tuesday evenings from 6-9pm at WCNI 90.9 FM in New London.

She grew up in New Fairfield, CT in a musical family, with a father who played guitar and listened to country artists such as Hank Williams and Patsy Cline, and a mother who loved Elvis Presley. Involvement in band and chorus in high school led to membership in the UCONN Marching Band and a two-week tour of Europe performing with the band in the early 1980s.

Anne moved to New London in 1987 because of the vibrant local music scene there. In 2005 she began putting together a concert calendar to get the word out about all the local band shows that were taking place in the area. She enjoys books, animals, hiking, and the beach, and sees as much live original music as her “day job” schedule permits.
