RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE WEEK
On Friday night, Ken Atkins and the Honky Tonk Kind (www.kenatkins.com) will play at 33 Golden Street in New London. I know this band has enough songs to play all night long, so hopefully they will do that. This is their first show at 33 Golden. The club is quickly becoming a favorite of bands and music lovers in the area. It’s a comfortable place to hang out, and the A/C is nice and cold too. Cover is usually $5, and the show starts at 8 pm.
At the Bank Street Cafe on Friday, you can check out Culver (http://www.culverband.com/), Red Blade (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Red-Blade/189744664386685), and the Lamb Bombs (https://www.facebook.com/pages/LAMB-BOMBS/173945028952). The Lamb Bombs, from Deep River, have been around since the mid-90s. The band’s music has always been hard to categorize, but they describe their music as a mix of “stoner-punk with psycho-prog”. The other two acts on the bill are metal. Cover is $5 and first drink is free. The show starts at 10 pm.
On Saturday night at the Hygienic Art Park in New London, it will be Greg Piccolo and Heavy Juice (http://www.gregpiccolo.com/index.html), along with opener John Fries and the Heat (www.johnfriesmusic.com). Greg Piccolo spent 24 years as sax player and vocalist with Rhode Island’s Roomful of Blues. John has been mixing it up of late, playing with a few different band lineups and special guests. I’m not sure what he’s planning for this evening, but it will undoubtedly be good. The show starts at 7 pm and ends at 11. Admission is by suggested donation, and all ages are welcome.
The Bank Street Cafe will have Trust Fire (https://www.facebook.com/trustfiremusic), Missing Cat (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Missing-Cat/105805546138604), and Flesh Hammer (http://www.fleshhammer.com/home.htm) on Saturday. I hear that Missing Cat has been in the studio recently, so maybe a new recording is on the way. They released a four-song ep called Big Plans in 2011, and I don’t think I’ve had a chance to see them since then. Flesh Hammer has been extremely quiet of late, and I can’t remember the last time I heard of them playing a gig locally. They are always a lot of fun and have a way of polarizing the audience. You either love these guys or…uh…you don’t. They also one of the area’s longest-lived bands, with their beginnings way back in 1985. There have been a few lineup changes, and they are currently playing as a five-piece, with two guitars. I believe that they are working on a new album as well.
Also on Saturday, there will be some local artists performing at the Celebrate East Lyme festival (http://www.celebrateeastlyme.com/) in downtown Niantic. The website doesn’t have a complete list of performers, but there is a huge picture of Steve Elci on the event home page. What we know is that Jake Carpenter will be on the East Lyme Youth Services stage (on the town green) from 6-7 pm, and The Sue Menhart Band (www.suemenhart.com) plays in front of Cafe Del Sol on Main St. off and on from 3pm – 8pm. The festival takes place from 3-9 pm on Main Street and Pennsylvania Avenue and it’s free.
Here’s Jake Carpenter with his dad’s band the Hoolios:
