HOT Rewind

Dog Star Blue

Dog Star Blue

Lots happened last week and this week is even bigger so let’s get to it.

My Counting Crows pictures and review for Ryan’s Smashing Life in Boston were published.  Here they are.  I am very proud.  http://www.rslblog.com/2012/07/memories-from-outlaw-roadshow-leg-one.html

The extended holiday weekend was a series of insane days and nights with lots of music to be seen and heard.  It was pure awesomeness for this bedlamite!  Friday night, we took in yet another excellent show at Arch Street in HartfordDog Star Blue is a jam band out of Hartford that kept everyone on the dance floor with originals plus some great covers like “Boogie on Reggae Woman.”  Good times.  Check them out.

Saturday was the annual New London Sailfest.  I think the threat of storm clouds kept a few people away during the day as the crowd was a bit light on Bank Street but as the evening drew closer, the usual amazing crowd gathered on the docks for the fireworks display (I still contend our fireworks are equal to or better than NYC.)  We managed to catch a couple of bands – we arrived late due to the aforementioned Friday!  Brittany Smoochput on an interesting hip hop and dance

performance.  She’s got a bright career ahead of her.  From there, we caught crowd favorite, John Fries and the Heat who performed many songs from his new EP, US 50.  He’s got some new players and they all sounded great.  John’s a must see any time.  It should be mentioned that Sailfest had a bit of a melancholy about it without The Reducers this year…Oh and we did manage to wander into Telegraph Records to pick up more vinyl.  I swear…I am bringing those sunglasses back, I promise!!

Sailfest

Sailfest

You’d think a day at Sailfest was enough…but not for this crew!  As we watched the skyrockets in flight over the water, we hurried to our car to make it to Café 9 in New Haven to catch the Stark Raving Lulu CD release show for their new effort Welcome to the Fun-O-Sphere.  And a whirling dervish of fun they were with a little help from a couple of back up singers – including yours truly on one my faves, “Big Man” – and The Peacock Flounders as well as The Sawtelles.  The ladies put on one hell of a show to introduce their CD to the masses.  Mozel Tov, girls!  Hope it’s a big un for you!  MWAH!

Amy Ronczka

Elison Jackson are doing something really cool and they hope you can help them out.  They are putting out a new EP entitled I Do Believe She Flew Out the Drain Pipe.  It’s all finished and ready to press…vinyl that is.  And they need your help.  Please help them get this out to you in the way they envision by contributing to their kick starter.  I know you won’t be disappointed!  More details here http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1896818903/i-do-believe-she-flew-out-the-drain-pipe

And it’s still that time of year again.  Please take the time to vote for your favorite bands in the Hartford Advocate’s Grand Band Slam 2012.  Here’s the link…(http://ct-survey.wehaaserver.com/survey-12-grand_band_slam_2012.html)  GO!!!

So that’s it.  Hope to see you all at a venue somewhere this next week – some cool suggestions below – and definitely hope you’ll get out to Gathering of the Vibes next week July 19-22!

“Spot”light on… Some Great Shows This Week!!

First something near and dear to me.  A good friend of mine is participating in a 60 mile breast cancer walk in Boston at the end of the month.  There will be a pasta dinner with all proceeds going to the charity on Saturday, July 14th 6-9 at the Hartford Elks Club.  Food.  DJ.  Raffles.  And a lot of very cool people.  Head down there!  <3

Also on Saturday, Indie Fest at the Oak has a HOT line up of local bands including The Suicide Dolls and Farewood.  Held at The Charter Oak Cultural Center in Hartford, it’s a great venue and a good opportunity to see many local bands in one spot.

Per usual, Manic Productions is bringing in some fab acts this week at a couple of local clubs one of which I can’t even believe.  On Sunday, check out HaHa Tonka, Corey Chisel and the Wandering Sons, and Murder By Death at Café 9.  For those of you who don’t know, Corey Chisel has been named one of Rolling Stone Magazine’s Best New Artists and just performed his new single, “I’ve Been Accused” on Letterman.  Check that out here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7rxZP_PnlSw  Please check with Manic Productions on ticket availability for this amazing line up.

Want more?  Yeah.  The Hold Steady at Arch Street Tavern in Hartford on Thursday. Yes.  The Hold Steady!  I tried to catch them in Philly last year at a festival (epic rain fail) and was greatly disappointed.  Now we can all catch them right here in Hartford.  Don’t miss out!  It’s not often you get to see a band of this caliber at an intimate venue like Arch!

Last, but certainly not least, the annual event many of us look forward to, Gathering of the Vibes.  Its four days (I’ll be there three!) of amazing music, food, sights, sounds, friends, and families.  I absolutely cannot wait and will bring you back lots of pictures.  But…see it for yourself!  Check out localbandreview.com for ticket information!  See ya at by the sea in Bridgeport!

Lisa Sanchez Gonzalez – lsg Original

Lover of music and the visual arts, Lisa Sanchez Gonzalez is the insanity behind lsg original photography. lsg specializes in artist and performer photography. She’s had the honor of photographing national bands such as Weezer, Snoop Dogg, A Simple Plan, Paramore, Whitesnake, Wye Oak, and The Antlers along with countless local bands and performers.

Hailing from Hartford, CT, Lisa is a life- long music connoisseur. Growing up, her mother exposed her to everything from The Stones to Simon and Garfunkel to Earth, Wind, and Fire to Loretta Lynn…and everything in between. No genre was left unexplored in her vinyl collection. She saw her first concert at 14…Rod Stewart at the (then called) Hartford Civic Center. Thirty years later, it’s still her favorite pastime.

Lisa has two kids (grown!) and a day job. Her loves of music and photography have melded into a second career. And her love of CT keeps her promoting and pushing for local artists and performers. Lisa spends the greater part of her free time seeing and shooting live bands, performers, and artists and art work…and purchasing vinyl!
