RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE WEEK
There are some interesting and unusual shows coming up this weekend on the shoreline. You can start your Friday night with dessert and live music outdoors when the Rivergods (http://therivergods.wordpress.com/) play their annual summer show at Michael’s Dairy in New London. The extremely talented Jay Franklin of the Franklin Brothers Band (http://franklinbros.com/) will be sitting in with the Rivergods on keyboards for the evening. Members of the Franklin Brothers and the Rivergods played together as the “Frankengods” at Westerly Summer Pops earlier in the summer, and I hear it was amazing. (Check out the video posted below.) Opening the show will be Jamie Barrett, formerly of Mystic. A peek at his Facebook page tells me that he is a Berklee-educated musician who is currently a music teacher in Franklin, MA. Michael’s Dairy (http://www.michaelsdairynl.com/) is located at 629 Montauk Avenue in New London, and the music happens from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. It’s free, so bring the kids and have ice cream for dinner.
Later that night, there will be a Vaudeville show at 33 Golden Street with music from the Weird Beards (http://www.theweirdbeards.com/). I hear that Weird Beard Brian Skidmore has a brand new baritone ukulele, so you will definitely want to have a look at that. The crowd will also be entertained by burlesque performers Miss Wednesday and Kristan Minske, magician Sean Padrigh, and comedians Rob Santos and Samantha Gaus. As the Weird Beards have a sort of carnival atmosphere surrounding them, they should be the perfect band for a night like this. If you are looking for something different to do this weekend, look no farther. There will be two shows, at 9 pm and 11:30 pm. Admission is $7.
Down the street at the El ‘n’ Gee Club, there’s the Dog Days of Summer show, a four-band bill with Anodyne X (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Anodyne-X/218002931550792), Mr. Slugg and DJ Rols (http://www.reverbnation.com/mrslugganddjrols), Detour, and Andrew Kerbs. There will also be goth, industrial, and EBM music from DJ Atterlothe, who will be spinning in between sets. Anodyne X (Dorian James, Phil Barello, Scott Lana) have been playing as a band for about 2 years, doing the occasional show in New York City as well as the New London area. Mr. Slugg and DJ Rols are an Electronica duo from Providence, with guitar and bass, digital sequencing, and DJ. The show starts at 9:30 pm, and cover is $6.
On Saturday night, the Hygienic Art Park is the place to be from 7 to 11 pm for the Hoolios (http://www.reverbnation.com/thehoolios) and Full Moon Jamboree. If you’ve never seen the Hoolios, they are one of the best bands in the area, and Jim Carpenter is a first-rate storyteller. These guys never disappoint. Opening act Full Moon Jamboree is a local “supergroup” of sorts, bringing together Paul Brockett, Joey Royale, Dave Anderson, and Tim O’Connor. They play classic country and are quickly becoming the band to see. The Art Park is located at 79 Bank Street in New London, and it’s a wonderful place to hear live music. All ages are welcome, and admission is by suggested donation.
At 33 Golden Street on Saturday night, you can see Bedroom Rehab Corporation (http://www.bedroomrehabcorp.com/), Problem with Dragons (https://www.facebook.com/problemwithdragons), and Flesh Hammer (http://www.fleshhammer.com). Problem with Dragons is from Easthampton, MA, while the other two bands are well-known local acts. Bedroom Rehab Corporation, the “post-grunge doom” bass/drums duo of Adam Wujtewicz and Meghan Killimade, has been quite busy playing live shows recently. Flesh Hammer has been through a few lineup changes, but the band has been around since 1985, and frontman Laurin Killian always puts on a great show. Cover is $5 and the show starts at 10 pm.
