HOT Rewind
LOOKING FOR LOCAL CD’S, kids! If you are a reader, you know that each week, I feature a local CT band CD in my blog. I drive around with it in the car all week and post on Friday. Sad to say, I have nothing to listen to this coming week! Want your CD in The Flounce? Email me at lsgforlbr@comcast.net =)
WIMBASH CELEBRATED ITS 9TH YEAR on Saturday with a full day of music, family, and workshops. I always enjoy walking into Sully’s in Hartford on WimBash days. The atmosphere becomes carnival like with a melting pot of people and music. When I arrived, the kids from The School of Rock were on stage outside at the Tikki Bar. The is the second time I’ve seen a group of School of Rock kids play (first was at Vibes) and they are just incredible. The range of songs they can tackle is amazing. One of the female singers actually belted out some Iron Maiden and rocked it hard! Later in the evening, 3 of 4 members of Living Colour (Corey is out touring with his band, Galactica) took the stage inside to blow the roof off of Sully’s along with the revolving members of The School of Rock. And yes, they did perform hits like “Cult of Personality” with another of the females from School of Rock kicking ass on vocals! It was another fab event for Doug Wimbish and I’m so glad I made it there. Oh, did I mention that friends of LBR (and GBS nominees) Klokwize were checking out the scene as well!? #supportlocal
If you missed it, here are some of my pictures of members of Living Colour playing with the kids from The School of Rock. http://www.localbandreview.com/2012/08/wimbash-2012-in-pictures-by-lsg/
WE TOOK A LITTLE TIME OUT from Wimbash to hop over to Rick Bober’s Birthday bash at Up or On The Rocks. Shag Frenzy spun tunes out on the upper patio on a gorgeous night. We got to spend a little time talking about upcoming shows all over the greater Hartford area with Rick. More on that coming soon! Trust me…It’s crazy ridiculous!!
A MAGIC RED BRACELET was key to good times on Sunday at Radio 104’s RockFest 2012. When I wasn’t shooting in the pit, we hung out at the Scion Lounge at the top of the “Big Stairs”. Seriously, fantastic view of the Scion Stage, tented room with big, cushy couches and chairs, and a bar with the best sound system ever! What more does anyone need!?!? Thanks to Fisch from Radio 104 and Joe and Matt from Live Nation for their hospitality. Fear Nuttin Band, Less Than Jake, Pepper, and Sublime with Rome kept everyone dancing and singing right up to the ending anthem, “Santaria”. Honestly, it was so well done for a Sunday night. The show was over by 10 giving everyone time to get home at a reasonable hour for the Monday morning grind. Well done!
The cool thing about this shoot is that I shot for Live Nation as well as Local Band Review. Here’s what it looked like from the pit! http://www.localbandreview.com/2012/08/radio-104-rockfest-2012-in-pictures-by-lsg/

WHILE LISTENING TO WESU 88.1 Homegrown yesterday, I heard some brand spanking new Heirlooms (spanking just for Robbie DeRosa!). Jesse Stanford was in studio singing a couple of tunes. I cannot begin to tell you how much I am looking forward to the new album from Heirlooms with that little taste!

“Spot”light on… The Grand Band Slam Nominees
There are 16 award categories for Best-of that will be given out on September 12 at the First Annual Connecticut Music Awards (CMA’s) also known in some circles as “Chip’s Music Award”. =) In the next few weeks, I will profile one band or performer in each category. In an effort to spread the love, I tried to choose bands that I either have never heard of (!!!) or haven’t written a lot about. Please take the time to go their web pages and check out the videos included with each profile. I bet you’ll find something new just as I did.

Band/Artist: Elison Jackson
Grand Band Slam Category: Folk/Americana
How and when was your band formed?:
Elison Jackson started as a solo thing for Sam Perduta in New Britain, CT. We became a ‘band’ in 2010 out of Berlin with the addition of Kevin Marrs on drums and shortly thereafter with Greg Perault on upright bass. We’re now based out of New Haven and added a lead guitarist and keyboard player (Michael Kusek and Dan Squid, respectively), and have been gigging non-stop since.
What does being nominated for a Grand Band Slam award mean to you?:
Being nominated for Grand Band Slam means people are listening to original music by local artists and hopefully it opens people’s eyes to music that isn’t Toby Keith or Dave Mathews.
Who do you give mad respect to for their musical accomplishments?:
Phil Ochs.
