RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE WEEK
The big show in the area this week is I AM Festival 2012 (http://iamfest.org/) in New London on Saturday. After a brief hiatus, the festival returns for another year, with some changes. This year, bands will play in the heart of downtown, on four stages, all within a block of each other. The main stages will be at the Parade Plaza and the Hygienic Art Park, with set times staggered between the two. When a band ends at one stage, another band will start at the other stage. There will also be peripheral stages at the Oasis Pub and the Telegraph record store. With everything happening in such a small area, it will be easy to check out as many of the bands as you would like to. In addition to the music, the I AM Festival will also include food vendors, beer and wine (at the Hygienic Art Park, for those of legal drinking age), and an indie marketplace (next to the Parade Plaza). Downtown stores and restaurants will also be open for business. This is a free, all-day event, open to all ages. Music begins at 1 pm and continues outdoors until 11 pm, then the final two bands will play indoors at the Oasis Pub until 1 am (or bar closing time). Parking is available in the municipal lot on Eugene O’Neill Drive, the Water Street and Governor Winthrop parking garages, and on the street. There are a total of 22 bands, with one of those still TBA. Here is the schedule with set times:

In other shows this week, you can see Vince Tuckwood (http://www.reverbnation.com/vincenttuckwood) play a solo acoustic show at Captain’s Pizza on Bank Street in New London on Thursday evening. Vince is a talented songwriter and guitarist, and he is also a published author of novels, screenplays, and poetry. He’ll entertain you with songs, stories and verse from 6 to 8 pm. There is no cover, and I believe the show will take place upstairs on the deck if weather permits.
Also on Thursday night, Jim Carpenter and friends (AKA the acoustic Hoolios) (www.locodare.com) make their regular monthly appearance under the moose at Sneekers Cafe in Groton. You never know who might sit in with the band for a guest spot at these shows. There is no cover, and the band plays from 7 to 10 pm. It’s always a good time.
On Friday night, one of my favorite bands returns to the area. The Mallett Brothers Band (http://mallettbrothersband.com/) will be playing at the High Noon Saloon (297 West Main Street) in Norwich, along with opener Colt Six. After seeing the Mallett Brothers at the Side Pocket Cafe for the first time last fall, I could not stop talking about them. In fact, I still can’t. This is such a great band! If you are at all into alt-country or roots music, do yourself a favor and go check them out. They are a young, hard-working 6-piece band from Portland, Maine, with brothers Luke and Will Mallett up front on guitars and vocals. Their dad (David Mallett) is a well known folk singer/songwriter, so talent runs in the family. The show starts at 9 pm and admission is $5. Be sure to bring extra money for merch, which includes their two CDs and also the “Mallett Brothers Drinking Kit”. (The shot glass is pretty sweet…) They will also be within a reasonable driving distance on Thursday night, when they play at the Met in Pawtucket, RI.
