Anne’s Shore & More #58 – September 19 2012

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE WEEK

This week I am going to focus on two shows that are near and dear to my heart. First of all, on Friday night, there will be a 3-band show at 33 Golden Street in New London with Anne Castellano and the Smoke (my band), Dogbite, and Nancy Parent with Hugh Birdsall and Dana Takaki. This will also be a CD release show for the brand new SheSaidHeSaid EP called “In the Dark”. SheSaidHeSaid is Anne Castellano and Hugh Birdsall (of Dogbite), and they will be performing the songs on the EP with their respective bands. The four-song CD will be available for $5 at the show. It’s a self-produced, limited edition release, so don’t miss out. Here’s a nice review from Wailing City’s Adam Wujtewicz: http://wailingcity.com/shesaidhesaid-in-the-dark. After the show, CDs will be for sale at the Telegraph in New London and also at Dogbite and Smoke shows. Nancy Parent (http://nancyparent.wordpress.com/) will open the show at 9:30, performing with Hugh on guitar and Dana Takaki on violin. She has a solo CD, “Vision of Angels”, coming out in October, and you will hear more about her CD release show in an upcoming blog post. Dogbite (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Dogbite-Band/108188045904888) will be up next at 10:30, with Tom Trombley of the Reducers on drums for this show. Coincidentally, Tom also played drums on the SheSaidHeSaid EP. Anne will join Dogbite on vocals for two songs during their set. Finally, Anne Castellano and the Smoke (https://www.facebook.com/AnneCastellanoAndTheSmoke) will take the stage at around 11:30, with Hugh joining them for two songs on guitar and vocals. This will be the Smoke’s second show at this club, with the first one being the Steve Kaika Benefit in June. 33 Golden is a great, comfortable place to hang out and see a band. It should be a great night. Cover is probably $5.

The Reducers

The Reducers Rave On Saturday Sept 22

On Saturday night, the Rose Barn Theater at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center in Waterford is the place to be. It’s the release party for “Rave On: A Tribute to the Reducers Vol. 1″, a 24-track tribute CD featuring artists from the east and west coasts of the United States and even Japan. All proceeds from the show and CD will benefit the family of Reducers bassist Steve Kaika, who passed away in June from cancer. Performers will be Heap (http://www.heap-nyc.com/), the Dogmatics (http://www.thedogmatics.com/), the Manchurians (http://www.myspace.com/themanchurians), Paul Brockett Roadshow (http://www.paulbrockettroadshow.com/), the Rivergods (w/Dave Rave and Lauren Agnelli) (http://therivergods.wordpress.com/), the Clothespins (http://www.newlondonrocks.com/wiki/index.php?title=The_Clothespins) , Matt Gouette (with band) (http://www.reverbnation.com/mattgouette), Jes Farnsworth (of the Backstabbers)(https://www.facebook.com/TheBackstabbers), Missy Roback (http://www.missyroback.com/), and Blonde Furniture (http://www.blondefurnitureband.com/). Musical performances will focus on Reducers and Reducers-related music. The Reducers’ music touched a lot of people in the 34 years they played together, and it will be great to see their friends and musical peers pay tribute to them in this fashion. Many of the musicians involved have close ties to the band, with the Manchurians’ Roger C. Reale having recorded an EP, “Wake the Neighbors”, with the Reducers in 1987. Heap is the only band to join the Reducers on their Rave On record label. Jes Farnsworth is the nephew of the late Steve Kaika. I could go on and on. As the “godfathers” of the New London music scene, the loss of the Reducers is a huge blow to music fans everywhere. They paved the way and made it possible for all of today’s original local bands to do what they do. These four regular guys practiced hard and got good, and they are still inspiring New London-area kids to form their own bands. This will be one of those shows that will be talked about long after it happens, so I’d suggest being there. Beer and wine will be available for purchase, and there will be free pretzels. Suggested donation is $10, and don’t forget to bring money for a CD. Doors open at 6:30 pm and all ages are welcome. The Rose Barn is the first venue that the Reducers ever played as a band, way back in 1978. More information on the CD can be found on the Reducers’ website: http://www.thereducers.com/ and the Good Sponge Records website: http://goodsponge.wordpress.com/

Anne Castellano is a New London songwriter and musician who has played in several bands over the years (the Uninformed, the Skin Walkers, and the Cavities). She has been performing as a solo artist since 2007 but is currently rehearsing with her new band Anne Castellano and the Smoke.

In 2010 she released a full-length self-produced CD entitled “What’s Been Going On” on the New London-based Cosmodemonic Telegraph label. She is a 30-year veteran of college radio, and is currently doing the Deranged Radio Show on alternate Tuesday evenings from 6-9pm at WCNI 90.9 FM in New London.

She grew up in New Fairfield, CT in a musical family, with a father who played guitar and listened to country artists such as Hank Williams and Patsy Cline, and a mother who loved Elvis Presley. Involvement in band and chorus in high school led to membership in the UCONN Marching Band and a two-week tour of Europe performing with the band in the early 1980s.

Anne moved to New London in 1987 because of the vibrant local music scene there. In 2005 she began putting together a concert calendar to get the word out about all the local band shows that were taking place in the area. She enjoys books, animals, hiking, and the beach, and sees as much live original music as her “day job” schedule permits.
