Anne’s Shore & More #62 – October 18 2012

Anne’s Shore & More #62 – October 18 2012

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE WEEK

It had to happen eventually, so it’s not a huge surprise that this weekend on the shoreline is looking a bit quiet. Your best bet on Friday night will be the show at the new Bean and Leaf Cafe in New London. Bean and Leaf has recently relocated to 461 Bank Street, on the site of the old Carlo’s restaurant, in the Harbour Towers condominium complex. Shoreline Acoustic Music Society will be presenting the Daniel Pearl World Music Days memorial concert, which will be a tribute to the Wall Street Journal/amateur musician who was killed in Pakistan. The music will start at 7:00 pm and the show is all ages. Admission is free, but donations will be collected for charity. Here is a list of the performers at the show and their set times:

7:00-7:12 – Gaetano Patalano
7:15-7:27 – Pat Daddona
7:30-7:42 – Will D’Sol
7:45-7:57 – John “Woody” Wood
8:00-8:12 – Bruce McDermott
8:15-8:27- Mike Bailey & Steve Fagin
8:30-8:42 – Golden Ratio
8:45-8:57 - Kevin Dyer
9:00-9:12 – John Beaty
9:15-9:27 – the Crew (i.e. Everyone)

Also on Friday night, you can check out some jug band and folk music at Schine Auditorium on the Sacred Heart University campus in Fairfield. Washboard Slim and the Bluelights (http://www.bluelightsjugband.com/), from Hamden, will be playing, along with Amalgamated Muck (http://www.reverbnation.com/amalgamatedmuck), from Chester. This show will be broadcast live on WSHU-FM (91.1), and it is open to the public as well. If you are planning to be there in person, arrive at 9:45 pm, and the live broadcast will start at 10 pm on the radio or web stream (http://www.wshu.org/flash_player_main.php).

On Saturday night, there will be an excellent show at Two Boots in Bridgeport, with a four band lineup. It will be worth the trip to see Joe Buck Yourself (http://www.reverbnation.com/joebuckyourself), former guitarist of Th’ Legendary Shack Shakers and upright bass player with Hank Williams III and Assjack. Joe Buck, from Kentucky, has done several shows in the New London area, and he performs as a one-man punk/country band who plays guitar and kick drum. He’s a great showman and I highly recommend going to see him. As a radio DJ, I regret that all but about two of his songs are unsuitable for airplay, but the music is intense, angry, and honest, and should be heard live. This is his only Connecticut appearance of the tour, and he doesn’t get to this area often, so don’t miss out. He’s a really nice guy who only LOOKS scary, so be sure to talk to him and buy some CDs. Other bands on this bill are Viva Le Vox (http://www.reverbnation.com/vivalevox), a hellbilly band from Southeast Florida who is touring with Joe Buck, and CT locals Jacques Le Coque (https://www.facebook.com/JacquesLeCoque), and Defcon Five (http://www.thedefconfive.com/). Cover is $7.

Willimantic has a new record store, the appropriately named Willimantic Records, and they have been having shows there on Sunday afternoons. This coming Sunday there will be three bands playing at the store:  The World is a Beautiful Place and I Am No Longer Afraid to Die (http://theworldis.bandcamp.com/) , Slingshot Dakota (http://slingshotdakota.tumblr.com/), and Road Worrier (from Willimantic, ex-Book Slave). This is a free show and the music starts at 2 pm. Willimantic Records is located at 744 Main Street.

Here is Joe Buck with “The Devil is On His Way”, recorded live at Cafe Nine:

Anne Castellano is a New London songwriter and musician who has played in several bands over the years (the Uninformed, the Skin Walkers, and the Cavities). She has been performing as a solo artist since 2007 but is currently rehearsing with her new band Anne Castellano and the Smoke.

In 2010 she released a full-length self-produced CD entitled “What’s Been Going On” on the New London-based Cosmodemonic Telegraph label. She is a 30-year veteran of college radio, and is currently doing the Deranged Radio Show on alternate Tuesday evenings from 6-9pm at WCNI 90.9 FM in New London.

She grew up in New Fairfield, CT in a musical family, with a father who played guitar and listened to country artists such as Hank Williams and Patsy Cline, and a mother who loved Elvis Presley. Involvement in band and chorus in high school led to membership in the UCONN Marching Band and a two-week tour of Europe performing with the band in the early 1980s.

Anne moved to New London in 1987 because of the vibrant local music scene there. In 2005 she began putting together a concert calendar to get the word out about all the local band shows that were taking place in the area. She enjoys books, animals, hiking, and the beach, and sees as much live original music as her “day job” schedule permits.
