Anne’s Shore & More #64 – October 31 2012

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE WEEK

I am an honest person, so I’ll come right out and warn you of some blatant self-promotion ahead in this week’s blog. That said, I want to make sure that you know about the big show this Friday night at Cafe Nine in New Haven. The Manchurians, Anne Castellano and the Smoke, and Forgotten By Friday will all be playing, in a show you do not want to miss. The Manchurians (https://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Manchurians/69051959739?fref=ts), who are from the New Haven area, are Roger Reale’s 4-piece Maximum R&B band, formed in 1999. They are hopefully coming out with a new EP soon, as it’s been in the works for quite awhile now (or at least it seems that way to me). The band also contributed a cover of the Reducers song (“Fashion of the Times”) to the recently released tribute album Rave On: A Tribute to the Reducers Vol. 1. Bassist/vocalist Roger Reale and the Reducers are friends who go way back, and they even wrote and recorded an EP (Wake the Neighbors) together in 1987. Roger’s songwriting has earned him a WC Handy Blues Award nomination (for Song of the Year!) and two Grammy nominations. Also in the band are Dean Falcone on guitar, Bob Orsi on harmonica and backing vocals, and Roger’s son Mat on drums. Whenever I see this band I am always amazed at just how hard Mat hits those drums. Really, you must see for yourself. The Manchurians’ set is guaranteed to be loud and intense. I’m hoping to bring them back to New London for a show soon.  My band, Anne Castellano and the Smoke (www.facebook.com/annecastellanoandthesmoke), was formed last December, and after many months of rehearsals, we have been playing to good reviews from fans and fellow musicians at each of our shows. We plan to start recording after the holidays with the goal of releasing a full-length CD in 2013. Forgotten By Friday is a self-described “Americana  Rock/Nu Country” band from southern CT who has been nominated for several Advocate Grand Band Slam awards. They released their first album a little over a year ago. The show starts around 10 pm with a set from Anne Castellano and the Smoke , followed by the Manchurians, and Forgotten By Friday (http://www.forgottenbyfriday.com/home.cfm) will close out the night. Doors open at 8 and the cover is $5.

On Saturday night, the New London area music community puts on another big event to assist the family of a musician who was taken away too soon. Karl Kelly (http://www.welovekarlkelly.com/) passed away on October 2nd after a courageous battle with cancer. He was a much-loved singer and performer who seemed to know just about everyone, and he also inspired and influenced many local musicians over the years. The Karl Kelly Tribute and Benefit Show takes place at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center’s Rose Barn Theater (305 Great Neck Road) in Waterford from 1-5 pm (and possibly continuing even later) on Saturday. Karl played in many bands over the years, beginning in the 1960s, and members of his former bands such as the Formost,Vice, KBM, and Little Anthony and the Locomotives will be playing throughout the day. Members of the Hoolios, John Fries & the Heat, and Special 20 are on the list of performers too. The Karl Kelly Band (aka the Kelly Company), Karl’s most recent band, will also play with an assortment of guest vocalists. The set lists will be completely comprised of songs that he used to play or those that were special to him. Although there are a few exceptions, most of the performers at the show will be musicians who worked with Karl at one time or another during his long career. Karl’s son Winston will be the MC. Tickets are $12 in advance (available on the website) and $15 at the door. All ages are welcome, and there will be a cash bar with beer and wine. If you aren’t able to get out to the show, you can still help out by making a donation online at http://www.welovekarlkelly.com/3/donate.htm . All donations and proceeds from ticket sales will go to assist Karl’s wife Susan and his family cover the large medical bills incurred during his illness. It’s a good cause, and it sounds like it will be one hell of a good show.

Anne Castellano is a New London songwriter and musician who has played in several bands over the years (the Uninformed, the Skin Walkers, and the Cavities). She has been performing as a solo artist since 2007 but is currently rehearsing with her new band Anne Castellano and the Smoke.

In 2010 she released a full-length self-produced CD entitled “What’s Been Going On” on the New London-based Cosmodemonic Telegraph label. She is a 30-year veteran of college radio, and is currently doing the Deranged Radio Show on alternate Tuesday evenings from 6-9pm at WCNI 90.9 FM in New London.

She grew up in New Fairfield, CT in a musical family, with a father who played guitar and listened to country artists such as Hank Williams and Patsy Cline, and a mother who loved Elvis Presley. Involvement in band and chorus in high school led to membership in the UCONN Marching Band and a two-week tour of Europe performing with the band in the early 1980s.

Anne moved to New London in 1987 because of the vibrant local music scene there. In 2005 she began putting together a concert calendar to get the word out about all the local band shows that were taking place in the area. She enjoys books, animals, hiking, and the beach, and sees as much live original music as her “day job” schedule permits.
