Anne’s Shore & More #71 – December 20 2012

Anne’s Shore & More #71 – December 20 2012

On Friday night, the Sue Menhart Band ( will be playing the happy hour slot at Stash’s Cafe in New London. This band has added a horn section and is now an eight-piece, with the following lineup: Sue Menhart on guitar and vocals, Kevin Clark on drums, Dave Foret on bass, Don Bergeron on lead guitar, Dan Spano on keys, Tommy Mahfood on sax, Danny Motta on trumpet, and Rob Funk on trombone. Stash’s is located at 95 Pequot Avenue in New London, and the show is from 5:30-8:30 pm. If you can’t make it to this show, the band will also be appearing at the Bulkeley House in New London on Saturday night. That show starts at 9 pm.

Also on Friday night, Head Weird Beard Brian Skidmore celebrates his birthday with a show at the Bank Street Cafe in New London. The Weird Beards, Matzah Cigar, and Burnouts From Outer Space will all be playing.  Burnouts From Outer Space ( has a new guitarist, Max Kelly, and the rest of the current lineup is Bobby Crash on lead vocals, Matt Gouette on synthesizers, Jason Banta on guitars and vocals, Scott Kolp on drums, and Graham Parker Benedict on bass. Matzah Cigar ( is a young art rock trio with strong progressive rock and jazz influences. Drummer Ben LaRose also plays in the Suicide Dolls. Other members are guitarist Max Kelly, who recently joined Burnouts From Outer Space, and bassist Michael Albaine. The band started playing together in 2008, when they were all in high school. I saw them play at the Hygienic Art Park about a year and a half ago, and they were amazing. The Weird Beards ( are always great fun, with all sorts of weirdness and theatrics including lobster costumes, pirates, plaid pants, robots, and the occasional extra musicians joining in. They are definitely one of the area’s most entertaining live bands. The show starts at 9 pm, and $5 cover includes a free drink.

On Saturday night, Sean Murray celebrates his birthday at the Oasis Pub in New London with a special show featuring Bearstronaut ( and Fake Babies ( In addition to the band sets, the guys from Bearstronaut will DJ, and Justin Roberts (AKA Kids With Crushes) of Fake Babies will DJ a set as well. Fake Babies are a four-piece “dirty soul” band from New Haven whose self-titled four-song EP was included in CT.Com’s Favorite Connecticut Albums of 2012. They are currently working on their second EP. Bearstronaut, a synth-pop band from Boston, was named one of CMJ’s Top Bands To See at the 2011 CMJ Music Festival. This will be their first show at the Oasis. There is a $5 cover, and the Facebook event says the show starts at 9 pm.

Also happening on Saturday will be the Home For the Skalidays show at the Waterford VFW. The bands are Llama Tsunami (, Short Handed Goal

(, Defenders of Pluto (, Smokebomb Mondays
(, and Too Square
( The show starts at 6 pm, it is all ages, and admission is $5. This is a Toys For Tots benefit, so bring a new unwrapped toy to donate as well. The Waterford VFW is located at 382 Boston Post Road.

Anne Castellano is a New London songwriter and musician who has played in several bands over the years (the Uninformed, the Skin Walkers, and the Cavities). She has been performing as a solo artist since 2007 but is currently rehearsing with her new band Anne Castellano and the Smoke.

In 2010 she released a full-length self-produced CD entitled “What’s Been Going On” on the New London-based Cosmodemonic Telegraph label. She is a 30-year veteran of college radio, and is currently doing the Deranged Radio Show on alternate Tuesday evenings from 6-9pm at WCNI 90.9 FM in New London.

She grew up in New Fairfield, CT in a musical family, with a father who played guitar and listened to country artists such as Hank Williams and Patsy Cline, and a mother who loved Elvis Presley. Involvement in band and chorus in high school led to membership in the UCONN Marching Band and a two-week tour of Europe performing with the band in the early 1980s.

Anne moved to New London in 1987 because of the vibrant local music scene there. In 2005 she began putting together a concert calendar to get the word out about all the local band shows that were taking place in the area. She enjoys books, animals, hiking, and the beach, and sees as much live original music as her “day job” schedule permits.
