Anne’s Shore & More #78 – February 7 2013

Anne’s Shore & More #78 – February 7 2013

There’s no shortage of live shows this weekend on the shore, and there are several good choices on both Friday and Saturday nights. Let’s pretend that we aren’t about to get slammed with 1-2 feet (or more) of snow with possible blizzard conditions on Friday, OK? OK. On Friday night, you can see the Weird Beards ( and the Doctors Fox ( at the Bank Street Cafe in New London. Weird Beards bassist Jake Kaeser has a beautiful new electric bass (he built it!), and you just might see him play it at this show. The Beards had a great night hosting the recent Hygienic Cabaret, and so did the audience. I know I’ve said it before, but this is a really fun band. The show starts at 10 pm and cover is $5.

Also on Friday night, the Sue Menhart Band ( will be at Sneekers Cafe in Groton, along with their fabulous horn section. They have just released a brand new single that’s the lead-off track on the new Good Sponge Sampler Volume 2 compilation. Listen to it here:  There’s no cover at Sneekers and the show starts at 8 pm. You might want to call ahead or check the club’s Facebook page in case the forecasted snow storm changes things.

Over at the Steak Loft in Mystic, Jim Carpenter and friends (, AKA the acoustic Hoolios, will play an acoustic show with Jake Carpenter sitting in as a special guest. This show starts at 7 pm and there is no cover. But I have a feeling you won’t be going much of anywhere on Friday night…

Saturday night looks a little more promising, with the storm ending around mid-day, but you still might want to check with the club before heading out to a show. New London’s Oasis Pub will host the Rock Lobster Band-O-Matic (, now in its second year. Band lineups were drawn at random at the Rock Fix, and after only two weeks of rehearsals, they are now ready to perform one original tune and one cover. Here are the lineups, with “O” meaning “Other instrument”, which could be just about anything:  Band One: V: Andrew Camacho, G: Alex Pellish, B: Matt Gouette, D: Brendan Lemieux, O: Ben Coutu; Band Two: V: Mark DeSouza, G: John Wasylik, B: Alex Hernandez, D: Todd Schenk, O: Chris Lennox; XANADUDE : V: Nat Peterson, G: Tom Spranklin, B: Matt Potter, D: Jim Villano, O: Jed Johnson; Band Four: V: Travis Lanza, G: Vince Tuckwood, B: Bob Bourne, D: Jon Morse, O: Steve Sigel; LE FROMAGE: V: Sue Mead, G: Michael Harris, B: Jaime Duquette, D: Matt Lipman, O: Karen Mitchill. Cover at the Oasis is usually $5. The show is also the closing party for Hygienic Art XXXIV. Order of bands will be determined on the night of the show.

Also on Saturday night, the Lost Riots (, the Lamb Bombs (, and Straight to VHS ( will all be at the Bank Street Cafe in New London. The Lost Riots, who play garage punk from New Haven,  just released a brand new 7″ EP called “Downtown”. Fun fact: guitarist Sean Beirne, who used to play with Joanie Loves Tchotchkes and the Battlecats, is a guitar student of THE Richard Lloyd. As if Sean weren’t already cool enough… Guitarist/vocalist Jeffrey Thunders is perhaps best known for his other band, the Black Noise Scam. Bassist Matt Mullarkey used to play in an awesome punk band called Elvis McMan ( And the music these guys are making right now is pretty damn good too. The Lamb Bombs have been around the area a lot lately, and that’s a good thing. These guys are excellent and definitely worth checking out. Straight to VHS ( just released a brand new album called “Rewinder” (, which was the subject of a recent multiple-part video series on the Day newspaper’s website ( The show starts at 10 pm and cover is $5.

Over in Mystic on Saturday, Slander ( will be having a single release party for “Magnets/Ghosts” at the Workshop, along with brand new Mystic band Riftreaper and Hard Plastic Buttons (, an electrorock band from Brooklyn. Slander kicked off the Rock Fix in New London a couple of weeks ago with a great set. It’s always exciting to see talented new bands get started, especially when they have played in other good local  bands such as Low-Beam and Incessant Pop Group. The show is all ages and starts at 7 pm. Admission is $6. The Workshop is located at 40 Washington Street in downtown Mystic.

Anne Castellano is a New London songwriter and musician who has played in several bands over the years (the Uninformed, the Skin Walkers, and the Cavities). She has been performing as a solo artist since 2007 but is currently rehearsing with her new band Anne Castellano and the Smoke.

In 2010 she released a full-length self-produced CD entitled “What’s Been Going On” on the New London-based Cosmodemonic Telegraph label. She is a 30-year veteran of college radio, and is currently doing the Deranged Radio Show on alternate Tuesday evenings from 6-9pm at WCNI 90.9 FM in New London.

She grew up in New Fairfield, CT in a musical family, with a father who played guitar and listened to country artists such as Hank Williams and Patsy Cline, and a mother who loved Elvis Presley. Involvement in band and chorus in high school led to membership in the UCONN Marching Band and a two-week tour of Europe performing with the band in the early 1980s.

Anne moved to New London in 1987 because of the vibrant local music scene there. In 2005 she began putting together a concert calendar to get the word out about all the local band shows that were taking place in the area. She enjoys books, animals, hiking, and the beach, and sees as much live original music as her “day job” schedule permits.
