RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE WEEK
With last weekend being completely preempted by a blizzard, hopefully everyone will have a chance to check out some live music this weekend. The big show on Friday night is the rescheduled Rock Lobster Band-O-Matic (https://www.facebook.com/events/458207044215810/), taking place at the Oasis Pub in New London. Band lineups were drawn at random during the Rock Fix on January 26, and the five new bands will each perform one original and one cover song at the show. Here is a list of the bands (with “O” meaning “other instrument”, which could be just about anything)”: PRINTS: V: Andrew Camacho, G: Alex Pellish, B: Matt Gouette, D: Brendan Lemieux, O: Ben Coutu; THE WIZARD KING: V: Mark DeSouza, G: John Wasylik, B: Alex Hernandez, D: Todd Schenk, O: Chris Lennox; XANADUDE: V: Nat Peterson, G: Tom Spranklin, B: Matt Potter, D: Jim Villano, O: Jed Johnson; THE MAD HATTER’S TRAVISTY: V: Travis Lanza, G: Vince Tuckwood, B: Bob Bourne, D: Jon Morse, O: Steve Sigel; LE FROMAGE: V: Sue Mead, G: Michael Harris, B: Jaime Duquette, D: Matt Lipman, O: Karen Mitchill. All the bands have now had an extra week to practice, as this show was originally scheduled for last weekend as the closing party for Hygienic Art XXXIV. Order of bands will be determined the night of the show. This event took place for the first time last year, and it was a smashing success, with some unlikely but really successful combinations of local musicians. You don’t want to miss this. Cover at the Oasis is usually $5, and start time is listed as 9 pm.
Also on Friday night, John Fries (www.johnfriesmusic.com) will be at Burke’s Tavern in Niantic with his band, Corina Malbaurn on bass and Mike Crivellone on drums. These guys just returned from a short tour that included playing in Memphis at the International Blues Challenge, so I’m sure they will have some great stories to tell. They even drove to Vermont to play a couple of shows last weekend during the blizzard. Now that’s dedication! There is no cover and the show starts at 8 pm.
On Saturday night, the Rivergods (www.therivergods.com) will be at Sneekers Cafe in Groton along with Somerville, MA band Black Marmot (http://blackmarmotband.com/), who will be celebrating the release of their new EP “The Everyday Seeker”. Black Marmot will play first as a duo (Linde and Tim), followed by the Rivergods. “The Everyday Seeker” is the first of two Black Marmot EPs produced by David Minehan (of Neighborhoods fame), with the second yet to be released. They also have a full-length album called “Run Home”, which was released in 2010. These two bands have played a bunch of shows together, so look for Tim of Black Marmot to join the Rivergods for a few tunes during their set. The Rivergods have a brand new single “When Times Were Good” coming out on the Good Sponge Sampler Volume 2, which is being released soon. (Until then, you can listen to the CD online or download it at http://goodsponge.bandcamp.com/) There is no cover at Sneekers, and the show starts at 8 pm.
Also on Saturday night, Sue Menhart (www.suemenhart.com) will be playing a solo acoustic show at the Riverwalk in Mystic. Sue will play from 8 to 11 pm , and a guest guitar is usually available for anyone who wants to sit in.. The Riverwalk is located at 14 Holmes Street in Mystic.
The Hoolios (www.locodare.com) will be playing a special show at the Tamarack Lodge in Voluntown on Saturday night. This is a Valentine’s buffet and dance party. Dinner starts at 6 pm, and the music will begin at 7 pm. Tickets are $49.95 per couple (why don’t they just call it $50?) and reservations are “strongly recommended”. Call 860-376-0224 for reservations.
