RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE WEEK
On Friday night, Burnouts from Outer Space (https://soundcloud.com/burnoutsfromouterspace) will be at the Oasis Pub in New London for their second show of the year, along with the Matt Gouette Band (http://www.reverbnation.com/mattgouette) and the Cake Brothers (https://www.facebook.com/TheCakeBros). The Burnouts’ last show was at 33 Golden, where they were very well-received by a big crowd on Hygienic weekend. Their most recent release, “The Mercury Man EP Vol. 1″, is available for free download at the aforementioned soundcloud link for a limited time. Seeing Matt Gouette with a band is always a treat. While his songs stand well on their own in a solo setting, hearing them with a full band really makes them shine. Matt’s fellow Burnouts will be backing him up for this set, and that means Bobby Crash on drums and Jason Banta on guitar. Matt has a new single, “Nobody Calls” on the new “Good Sponge Volume 2″ sampler (http://goodsponge.bandcamp.com/). Burnouts from Outer Space also contributed a song, “Queen of the Angels”, to the sampler. The Cake Brothers are from Westerly and will be making their Oasis Pub debut. Cover is $5 and the show starts at 9:30 pm.
Also on Friday night, the Sue Menhart Band (www.suemenhart.com) will bring their horn section to Burke’s Tavern in Niantic. (I wonder, does that horn section have a name yet? They were taking suggestions the last time I saw them at Burke’s.) Sue is a great singer and performer, and her Million Man Band will not disappoint. They also have a new single on that new Good Sponge compilation. The show starts at 8 pm and there is no cover.
On Saturday night, Horns of Ormus (https://www.facebook.com/HornsOfOrmus), Wrist Like This (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Wrist-Like-This/103543909732061), and SSPS (https://soundcloud.com/ssps) will be playing at 33 Golden Street in New London. Horns of Ormus is another local band that has received a lot of attention from the local show-goers. They were formed after Missing Cat called it quits, with most of the members of that band becoming Horns of Ormus. Wrist Like This is another one of those New London “supergroups”, with members of such bands as Fatal Film, Incognito Sofa Love, Carbomb Inc., Estrogen and Tonic, A Honey Wagon, Street People, the Liz Larsons, and Lawn Bastards. I’m sure I have forgotten a few, but you get the idea. And while we are talking local music history, members of Horns of Ormus have played in D.O.T., Varicose Brains, Live Nude Girls, the Hangmen, Los Diablos Charcoales, and Flesh Hammer, among others. SSPS is from Brooklyn, NY. The show starts at 9 pm and cover is $5. 33′s owner, Gene, just had a birthday so be sure to wish him well!
Also on Saturday night, the Hoolios (http://www.reverbnation.com/thehoolios) will be at the Commoner in New London. I may be wrong, but I think this may be their first appearance at the Commoner. The Hoolios are one of the area’s best bands, with a huge repertoire of songs that occasionally includes what Jim Carpenter has called “some really creepy stuff”. As often as I see this band, I always seem to hear them play something I’ve never heard before, and may never hear again. Their gulf coast, Latin, and Cajun flavored tunes just might help you forget that it’s February in Connecticut. The show starts at 8 pm and there is no cover.
Here are the Hoolios with “God Invents Rock and Roll”, recorded at the Hygienic Art Park:
