Anne’s Shore & More #81 – February 28 2013

Anne’s Shore & More #81 – February 28 2013

The first weekend of March promises to be a busy one, with good live bands at just about every venue in the New London area. I need to warn you of some blatant self-promotion, because the first show I’m going to recommend is my own. On Friday night, the big show is at the Bank Street Cafe in New London, with Anne Castellano and the Smoke (, Street People (, and the Bud Collins Trio ( Street People (Matt Potter, Jared Horner, Sebastian Coppotelli, and Jordan Harrelson) is one of the hottest bands in town right now. The Bud Collins Trio have recently reunited after a very long hiatus, and they are now an actual trio, for the first time in the band’s history. As for my band, I think we are pretty good, so you should come out to this show. The Bud Collins Trio will kick things off at 10 pm, followed by Street People, with Anne Castellano and the Smoke closing out the show. Admission is $5.

Also on Friday night, Home Body (, Modern Primates (, Hurricane Me, and False Mermaid ( will play a show at 33 Golden Street in New London. Be sure to catch Liz Larson and Danny Spurr playing out with their respective bands (False Mermaid and Modern Primates) before they become parents (soon!). Cover is $5 and the show starts at 9 pm.

Around the corner at the Bulkeley House, John Fries and his band ( will be performing on Friday. The Bulkeley House recently opened a new upstairs room, which has a great ambience and also has its own bar. It’s a good space to relax and listen to music, and the kitchen is open too. There is no cover charge and the show starts at 9 pm.

On Saturday night, there’s a big show at the German Club in Mystic with five bands:  Slander (, Art of Kanly (, Riftreaper (, Hard Plastic Buttons (, Johnny’s Mobil (, and Anderson Family Picnic ( The show is being held in memory of Otto, a golden retriever known as the “Mayor of Mystic”. Start time is 7 pm sharp (doors at 6:30), with a minimum entry fee of $5 at the door. As far as I know it’s all ages.

Also on Saturday, the El ‘n’ Gee Club in New London will host an all ages punk show with White Bronco, Rusty Things (, Ask the Dead (, Oh the Humanity (, and Wrist Like This ( Admission is $5 for those over 21 and $8 for under 21. Showtime is 8:30 pm.

Before you hit the clubs for live music, check out some print works by local artists S.L. Johnson (, Paige Howarth, Mark Bilokur & Vulturetown Press ( at the Gallery at the Wauregan in Norwich. The opening will take place on Friday night from 6 to 9 pm, and the gallery is located at 200 Main Street in Norwich. Refreshments will be available. This is a great pre-game, just saying…

Anne Castellano is a New London songwriter and musician who has played in several bands over the years (the Uninformed, the Skin Walkers, and the Cavities). She has been performing as a solo artist since 2007 but is currently rehearsing with her new band Anne Castellano and the Smoke.

In 2010 she released a full-length self-produced CD entitled “What’s Been Going On” on the New London-based Cosmodemonic Telegraph label. She is a 30-year veteran of college radio, and is currently doing the Deranged Radio Show on alternate Tuesday evenings from 6-9pm at WCNI 90.9 FM in New London.

She grew up in New Fairfield, CT in a musical family, with a father who played guitar and listened to country artists such as Hank Williams and Patsy Cline, and a mother who loved Elvis Presley. Involvement in band and chorus in high school led to membership in the UCONN Marching Band and a two-week tour of Europe performing with the band in the early 1980s.

Anne moved to New London in 1987 because of the vibrant local music scene there. In 2005 she began putting together a concert calendar to get the word out about all the local band shows that were taking place in the area. She enjoys books, animals, hiking, and the beach, and sees as much live original music as her “day job” schedule permits.
