Anne’s Shore & More #84 – March 21 2013

On Friday night, Dogbite ( will do their first show in three months, appearing at the Bank Street Cafe in New London. Dogbite has a brand new tune “Coyote”, on the “Good Sponge Sampler Vol. 2″ compilation , which has its official release on March 29. You can listen to Dogbite’s track here: These guys like to play early shows, and that’s what this one will be. The band will play from 6:30 to 9 pm and cover is $5.

The El ‘n’ Gee Club in New London has a seven-band lineup on Friday night, with hardcore punk legends DYS ( headlining. The Boston band released two albums in the 80s. They reunited in 2010 and have been playing shows on a regular basis since then. Also on the bill will be Empty Vessels (, Opposition Rising (, Catholic Guilt, Red Line Rebels (, M-13 (, and the Enemy Within ( While Empty Vessels and Catholic Guilt are from New London, the rest are Boston bands. This is an all ages show and start time is 6 pm. (Congratulations to the El ‘n’ Gee’s Katie Gear and Joaquin Gouin on the birth of their daughter Vivian!)

On Saturday night, Horns of Ormus (, A Honey Wagon (, and Lamb Bombs will be playing at 33 Golden Street in New London. Horns of Ormus consists of Greg Wharmby on vocals/bass/guitar, Alex Solano on guitar/backing vocals, and Jim Villano on drums, all former members of Missing Cat. New London’s A Honey Wagon is one of those bands that plays so rarely you wonder if they are still together. Well, apparently they are, which is definitely a good thing. The band’s lineup is Terry Flynn, Chris Moore, and Jay Curland, and they have one album to their credit: “How Come Every Time We Get Kentucky Fried Chicken It’s Raining Outside”. Lamb Bombs (, from Deep River, have made some friends at 33 Golden, and it’s great to see them back here again. They have a unique sound, with roots in punk, psych, and prog. Cover is $5 and the show starts at 9 pm.

Also on Saturday night, Daphne Lee Martin ( plays a homecoming show with her band at Cafe Nine in New Haven after returning from a two-week tour to SXSW and back. Not only has her album “Moxie” been getting excellent reviews, it has even made it into the CMJ Top 200 chart. The other bands on the bill will be Mount Moriah and Blessed Feathers. Folk/gospel/country band Mount Moriah ( is from North Carolina, and they have recently released a new album called “Miracle Temple” which is their second. Winconsin duo Blessed Feathers ( is touring with Mount Moriah. They released their debut EP, ” Peaceful Beasts in an Ocean of Weeds”, in 2012. Anne Castellano is a New London songwriter and musician who has played in several bands over the years (the Uninformed, the Skin Walkers, and the Cavities). She has been performing as a solo artist since 2007 but is currently rehearsing with her new band Anne Castellano and the Smoke.

In 2010 she released a full-length self-produced CD entitled “What’s Been Going On” on the New London-based Cosmodemonic Telegraph label. She is a 30-year veteran of college radio, and is currently doing the Deranged Radio Show on alternate Tuesday evenings from 6-9pm at WCNI 90.9 FM in New London.

She grew up in New Fairfield, CT in a musical family, with a father who played guitar and listened to country artists such as Hank Williams and Patsy Cline, and a mother who loved Elvis Presley. Involvement in band and chorus in high school led to membership in the UCONN Marching Band and a two-week tour of Europe performing with the band in the early 1980s.

Anne moved to New London in 1987 because of the vibrant local music scene there. In 2005 she began putting together a concert calendar to get the word out about all the local band shows that were taking place in the area. She enjoys books, animals, hiking, and the beach, and sees as much live original music as her “day job” schedule permits.
