Anne’s Shore & More #85 – March 28 2013

Anne’s Shore & More #85 – March 28 2013

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE WEEK

On Friday night, there will be a big show at the Bulkeley House in New London to celebrate the release of a brand new local music compilation CD. Fourteen bands and solo artists will perform for the Good Sponge Sampler Volume 2 release party. Volume 1 (

http://goodsponge.bandcamp.com/album/the-good-sponge-sampler-vol-1) was released a year ago, and this follow-up contains 18 tracks from some of the areas best bands and solo acts. If you can’t wait until the show, you can stream and/or download the album(s) right now at the Bandcamp site http://goodsponge.bandcamp.com/. The show will start downstairs at 7 pm, with the first group of musicians playing for a more acoustic-leaning “dinner set”. Beginning at 9 pm, head upstairs for the more rocking “dessert set”, which will continue until sometime after midnight. Here is the list of performers and set times:

There is no cover, but be sure you visit an ATM on the way to the show, because the CD will be available for purchase for $15. Individual artists will also have CDs and other merchandise for sale. The Bulkeley House has a full kitchen and bars both upstairs and downstairs, so you won’t have to miss any music to get that drink refill.

Also on Friday night, there will be a four-band show down the street at the Oasis Pub in New London, with

Pre War (https://www.facebook.com/prewar), Fatal Film (www.fatalfilm.com), Radical Dads (http://www.radicaldads.com/), and Plates of Cake (http://platesofcake.bandcamp.com/). Pre War is a band formed from the ashes of Conversion Party, and they just released R A W E R P, three songs from their forthcoming album, for download at http://prewar.bandcamp.com/. Three of the four bands on the bill are from Brooklyn, NY, with Fatal Film representing New London. Showtime is 10 pm, and cover at the Oasis is usually $5.

On Saturday night, there is another big show at the Oasis Pub, with New London’s doom/sludge duo Bedroom Rehab Corporation (www.bedroomrehabcorp.com), Harbor Lights (https://www.facebook.com/harborlightsband), and Warm (https://www.facebook.com/warmband). Warm is from the Enfield/Windsor Locks area of CT. They have released two albums of their metal/experimental rock, the appropriately titled “Warm” and “Warm II”. Harbor Lights, an ambient instrumental trio, will be visiting from Revere, MA. If you haven’t already done so, be sure to pick up a copy of Bedroom Rehab’s “Red Over Red” CD, which was produced by Justin Pizzoferrato and has earned great reviews worldwide. Yes, worldwide. Here’s a review from Hungary: http://stoner.blog.hu/2013/03/07/there_are_no_guitars_or_keyboards_on_this_album (no, I can’t read it either, but how cool!)  Showtime is 9:30 pm and cover is $5.

Here’s a favorite moment from last year’s Good Sponge Sampler Vol. 1 CD release show, with Jay Franklin and friends performing “Mike’s Backyard”:

Anne Castellano is a New London songwriter and musician who has played in several bands over the years (the Uninformed, the Skin Walkers, and the Cavities). She has been performing as a solo artist since 2007 but is currently rehearsing with her new band Anne Castellano and the Smoke.

In 2010 she released a full-length self-produced CD entitled “What’s Been Going On” on the New London-based Cosmodemonic Telegraph label. She is a 30-year veteran of college radio, and is currently doing the Deranged Radio Show on alternate Tuesday evenings from 6-9pm at WCNI 90.9 FM in New London.

She grew up in New Fairfield, CT in a musical family, with a father who played guitar and listened to country artists such as Hank Williams and Patsy Cline, and a mother who loved Elvis Presley. Involvement in band and chorus in high school led to membership in the UCONN Marching Band and a two-week tour of Europe performing with the band in the early 1980s.

Anne moved to New London in 1987 because of the vibrant local music scene there. In 2005 she began putting together a concert calendar to get the word out about all the local band shows that were taking place in the area. She enjoys books, animals, hiking, and the beach, and sees as much live original music as her “day job” schedule permits.
