Anne’s Shore & More #87 – April 11 2013

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE WEEK

There is a lot happening on the shoreline this week as the weather finally starts to resemble spring. This Friday night in New London, the Oasis Pub has a big show with Straight to VHS (https://www.facebook.com/straighttovhs), the Lost Riots (https://www.facebook.com/TheLostRiots), and Lamb Bombs (https://www.facebook.com/pages/LAMB-BOMBS/173945028952). It’s good to see Straight to VHS playing out a little more often since the release of their ” Rewinder” album. New Haven band the Lost Riots have made quite a few friends and fans here in New London, and they play here a lot. These guys play old school late-70s style punk, and they do it very well. Lamb Bombs are a really good, unique-sounding live band (I might describe them as a punk/prog hybrid) who has been around for about 18 years. This is bound to be an excellent show. Congratulations to the Oasis Pub for their recent win in CT.com’s Ultimate Bar Bracketology Championship!

Also on Friday night, Matt Gouette (http://www.reverbnation.com/mattgouette) will be performing at the Songbird Cafe in Old Lyme. He will be playing two or three sets of acoustic originals and the occasional cover tune. If you don’t already know Matt, he is an extremely talented songwriter and performer who is also a member of New London band Burnouts from Outer Spade. He has recently been doing shows with several of the members of the Burnouts as his backing band. This will be his first time entertaining for an entire show by himself. Matt writes great pop songs and has released some wonderful music, including the albums “Emeline at the Moon Tower” and “Living With the Ghost”. He also has a brand new single, “Nobody Calls”, on the recently released “Good Sponge Sampler Vol. 2″ (http://goodsponge.bandcamp.com/). The venue is an all ages coffehouse with sandwiches and beverages available. It’s located at 68 Lyme Street, near the Lyme Art Academy. I believe there is a $5 donation at the door, and the show starts at 7 pm.

Sue Menhart (www.suemenhart.com) will be doing a solo acoustic show on Friday night at the Riverwalk in Mystic. The music starts at 8 pm and the Riverwalk is located at 14 Holmes Street. Guest guitar is available for visiting musicians who want to sit in.

You can also see John Fries (www.johnfriesmusic.com) and his band (Corina Malbaurn on bass, Mike Crivellone on drums) at Burke’s Tavern in Niantic on Friday night. There is no cover and the show starts at 8 pm.

On Saturday, you can start your evening early at the Telegraph in New London. Beginning at 5 pm, there will be a listening party for the brand new Pretty and Nice (https://www.facebook.com/prettyandnice) album “Golden Rules for Golden People”, and the band may play a few acoustic songs in the store as well. Beginning at 6 pm, Brownbird Rudy Relic (http://brownbirdrudyrelic.com/) and Orb Mellon (http://www.orbmellon.com/Site/ABOUT.html) will both play short sets. Brownbird Rudy Relic is from NYC, and he plays “acoustic holler blues”. He also has a new EP called “The Real Juke Blues” that he will perform live in store. Western Connecticut blues artist Orb Mellon just released a new album “Love and Violence”, his first in four years. He has had several songs featured on television and in feature films. He also released a split CD EP (now out of print) with Brownbird Rudy Relic a few years ago. All three of these bands will be doing shows later that evening as well. Pretty and Nice will play at the Oasis Pub in New London, while Brownbird Rudy Relic and Orb Mellon have a show at 33 Golden Street (a couple doors down from the Telegraph) that night. Also on the bill at 33 Golden will be Gold Hope Duo (https://www.facebook.com/TheGoldHopeDuo), from New York. They are a roots/R&B/folk band with instrumentation that includes guitar, upright bass, kazoo, banjo, and foot percussion. The show starts at 9 pm and cover is $5.

Anne Castellano is a New London songwriter and musician who has played in several bands over the years (the Uninformed, the Skin Walkers, and the Cavities). She has been performing as a solo artist since 2007 but is currently rehearsing with her new band Anne Castellano and the Smoke.

In 2010 she released a full-length self-produced CD entitled “What’s Been Going On” on the New London-based Cosmodemonic Telegraph label. She is a 30-year veteran of college radio, and is currently doing the Deranged Radio Show on alternate Tuesday evenings from 6-9pm at WCNI 90.9 FM in New London.

She grew up in New Fairfield, CT in a musical family, with a father who played guitar and listened to country artists such as Hank Williams and Patsy Cline, and a mother who loved Elvis Presley. Involvement in band and chorus in high school led to membership in the UCONN Marching Band and a two-week tour of Europe performing with the band in the early 1980s.

Anne moved to New London in 1987 because of the vibrant local music scene there. In 2005 she began putting together a concert calendar to get the word out about all the local band shows that were taking place in the area. She enjoys books, animals, hiking, and the beach, and sees as much live original music as her “day job” schedule permits.
