Anne’s Shore & More #88 – April 18 2013

Anne’s Shore & More #88 – April 18 2013

This is an exceptionally busy weekend for live music in the area, and you can find good shows on both Friday and Saturday nights, although it may be hard to choose with so much going on. On Friday night, Ken Atkins and the Honky Tonk Kind ( will have a CD release party at 33 Golden Street in New London. The band is releasing a brand new album, “Everybody’s Movin On”, which is being released on Sound Job Austin (a small label from Austin, TX). This is their second full-length album, and it will be available for purchase at the show, so bring some cash. Music starts at 9 pm and the band will play all night. Cover is $5.

Also on Friday night, the El ‘n’ Gee in New London will have a huge show as a thank you to their patrons, with ten bands and no cover. If that wasn’t enough, all the bands will be bringing dishes of food to share. Doors open at 5 pm and you will want to get there early if you want to eat, as the food will probably go fast. Show-goers are encouraged to bring a dish to share with others as well. There will also be a clothing and food drive taking place, so please bring jackets, clothes, shoes, blankets, or a non-perishable food item to donate to local shelters. The following bands will play: the Enemies (, Amido Black (, Snow Orphan (, Empty Vessels (, Flesh Hammer (, American’t (, A Honey Wagon (, Straight to VHS (, Folk Ya’ll (, and the special return of  the Lawn Bastards ( The show is all ages and music will begin at 6 pm.

Saturday is Record Store Day, and the local stores have big events planned. At the Telegraph in New London, live music will start at 2 pm with Sam Perduta of Elison Jackson (,, followed by Goodnight Blue Moon  ( at 3 pm, Isaac Young Dup at 4 pm, John Fries & Corina Malbaurn  ( at 5 pm, Sidewalk Dave ( at 6 pm, Horns of Ormus ( at 7 pm, Fatal Film ( at 8 pm, and Bedroom Rehab Corporation ( at 9 pm. The store opens at 10 am and they will have giveaways and special limited edition Record Store Day releases for sale also. The show is free.

Up in Willimantic, Willimantic Records will also be celebrating Record Store Day with in-store live musical performances. They haven’t released set times, but there will be bands and solo artists performing in the afternoon as well as the evening. The following acts will play in the afternoon on Saturday: George Hakkila (, TZ, Sleek For the Long Flight, Connor Dotay (, Dan Katz, and Dawn Cook.

Later that evening, Posture and the Grizzly (, One Hundred Year Ocean (, the World is a Beautiful Place and I am No Longer Afraid to Die ( will all be playing. On Saturday night, there is a show at the Oasis Pub in New London with the Weird Beards, Rabbit

Rabbit, and Avedis. The Weird Beards always have a fun show planned to celebrate 4/20, and I’m sure this one will be no exception. Rabbit Rabbit (who have shared the bill with the Suicide Dolls) will be in town from Northampton, and all-female indie band Avedis will be here from Easthampton MA. Cover is $5 and the show starts at 10 pm.

Anne Castellano is a New London songwriter and musician who has played in several bands over the years (the Uninformed, the Skin Walkers, and the Cavities). She has been performing as a solo artist since 2007 but is currently rehearsing with her new band Anne Castellano and the Smoke.

In 2010 she released a full-length self-produced CD entitled “What’s Been Going On” on the New London-based Cosmodemonic Telegraph label. She is a 30-year veteran of college radio, and is currently doing the Deranged Radio Show on alternate Tuesday evenings from 6-9pm at WCNI 90.9 FM in New London.

She grew up in New Fairfield, CT in a musical family, with a father who played guitar and listened to country artists such as Hank Williams and Patsy Cline, and a mother who loved Elvis Presley. Involvement in band and chorus in high school led to membership in the UCONN Marching Band and a two-week tour of Europe performing with the band in the early 1980s.

Anne moved to New London in 1987 because of the vibrant local music scene there. In 2005 she began putting together a concert calendar to get the word out about all the local band shows that were taking place in the area. She enjoys books, animals, hiking, and the beach, and sees as much live original music as her “day job” schedule permits.
