WHALIE AWARDS 2013…What can I say?  It rained and rained and rained all day.  And then, by some miracle, it stopped just in time.  Pretty sure MC for the evening, Sean Murray, made a pact with…somebody…to make that happen!  It drizzled some during the show but it did not make the party any less amazing.  New London…and her fans…are resilient like that.  And what a show it was with performances by Bedroom Rehab Corporation, Daphne Lee Martin, and a cool-ass collaboration between Erik Lamb and The Suicide Dolls, and many more (see the LBR Pocket Video below along with tons of pictures from the red carpet and show).  And let us not forget the awards themselves.  Dozens of awards were given out to the very best in New London music.  I had the good fortune to share the stage with Chumzilla (Best DJ) to hand out awards for Best Alternative (The Suicide Dolls), Best Urban Alternative (N.M.E. the Illest), and Rock/Pop Album of the Year (Straight to VHS with “Rewinder”)…Surprisingly, my partner in crime, Mr. Chumzilla totally out f-bombed me at the podium.  There’ll be more opportunities, my friend.  The crown WILL be mine again!  I know that everyone had a great time and look forward to doing it again this time next year!

I’VE BEEN IN THIS MUSIC HEAVEN for the last week.  And here’s why…

Lys Guillorn and Mercy Choir have a 3 song EP called “Trouble” coming out June 4.  I’ve had a listen.  It’s exceptional.  A track called “Communion” actually brought tears to my eyes.  It hits you right in the heart.  You should pick it up next week.  Here’s a taste of the title track.

Then there’s a new album coming out from Julie Beman.  I mentioned it last week.  Here’s a little nugget from that record called “Crocus” for your review.

And…Erik Lamb, who was nominee at the Whalie Awards for Best Urban Alternative…He’s got an album you should totally check out (released last week) because his humor and lyrics – he really makes me giggle.  You can stream two tracks from “Guns Talk, Money Whispers” here and you can buy the album here

Last but not least this week…my new summer crush, Parker Hu.  I’ve been just loving her solo effort, “Time and Place” as well as her effort with Them Damn Hamiltons.  You NEED them.  Both of them.  All day long. and   PS…Check out her NEW video below in my video spot light.

All of the albums above will be given deeper consideration by our wonderful reviewer, but I just wanted to let you know how great they are!

If any of the above is indication of what is going to happen in CT music this summer, you all better buckle up and enjoy the ride!

As always, occupy a venue and get out there and support local!!

Peace, lsg

Lisa Sanchez Gonzalez – lsg Original

Lover of music and the visual arts, Lisa Sanchez Gonzalez is the insanity behind lsg original photography. lsg specializes in artist and performer photography. She’s had the honor of photographing national bands such as Weezer, Snoop Dogg, A Simple Plan, Paramore, Whitesnake, Wye Oak, and The Antlers along with countless local bands and performers.

Hailing from Hartford, CT, Lisa is a life- long music connoisseur. Growing up, her mother exposed her to everything from The Stones to Simon and Garfunkel to Earth, Wind, and Fire to Loretta Lynn…and everything in between. No genre was left unexplored in her vinyl collection. She saw her first concert at 14…Rod Stewart at the (then called) Hartford Civic Center. Thirty years later, it’s still her favorite pastime.

Lisa has two kids (grown!) and a day job. Her loves of music and photography have melded into a second career. And her love of CT keeps her promoting and pushing for local artists and performers. Lisa spends the greater part of her free time seeing and shooting live bands, performers, and artists and art work…and purchasing vinyl!
