Anne’s Shore & More #95 – June 6 2013

Anne’s Shore & More #95 – June 6 2013

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE WEEK

Coming up on Friday night, Vince Thompson and friends (http://www.reverbnation.com/vincethompson) will play at Steak Loft in Mystic. Vince always has a great band, and for this gig he will be joined by Bob Metzger on guitar, Marty Ballou on upright bass, and Gary Johnson on drums. There is always the chance that a talented relative or two might sit in for a few tunes also. Vince’s “Hurricane” CD is an excellent album of melodic country songs with sort of a jazz feel, and you really should pick up a copy of  if you haven’t already done so. There is no cover at Steak Loft and the show starts at 7 pm.

Also on Friday night, the John Fries band (www.johnfriesmusic.com) will be appearing at Burke’s   Tavern in Niantic. John’s band includes Corina Malbaurn on bass, Mike Crivellone on drums, and Vin DeLaria and/or Matt Zeiner on keyboards. Niantic is a small town, but they seem to know good music when they hear it, especially since John plays there (at Burke’s and also at the Black Sheep) pretty often. There is no cover and the music starts at 8 pm.

On Saturday, it’s the annual Bisque Fest at Captain Scott’s Lobster Dock (www.captscotts.com) in New London. I am a vegetarian, so don’t ask me about the bisque, but I can fill you in on all the great music that will be happening that day. First up, beginning at 1 pm, will be the Paul Brockett Roadshow (www.paulbrockettroadshow.com). The trio of Paul, Meghan, and Dave has not been playing out much at all, so be sure to get there early enough to see them. You’ll be glad you did. Following PBR will be Daphne Lee Martin (https://www.facebook.com/DaphneLeeMartin), at 3 pm. The John Fries band (www.johnfriesmusic.com) will play their second show of the weekend, beginning at 5 pm.  The Hoolios (www.locodare.com) will go on last, at 7 pm, and are scheduled to play until 9 pm. This is a great place to see live music, especially on a nice day, and you can bring the entire family. In case of bad weather, the bands will play under the pavilion, so the show will happen rain or shine. I hear the food is excellent also. Captain Scott’s opens at 11 am, there is no cover, and all ages are welcome. BYOB is fine too.

Also on Saturday, there will be a three band show taking place at the El ‘n’ Gee in New London. Anderson Family Picnic, the Skeleton Beats, and the Hulls will all perform on the smaller bar stage. The Hulls (https://www.facebook.com/thehullsnewhaven) will play from 10:00-10:30, followed by the Skeleton Beats  (https://www.facebook.com/TheSkeletonBeats?fref=ts) from 10:45-11:15.  Anderson Family Picnic (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Anderson-Family-Picnic/129579667053644?fref=ts) will close the show with a set from 11:30-12:15. Anderson Family Picnic has been working on a new album called “Plunder the Ruins of Atlantis”, and they have posted some rough tracks here: https://soundcloud.com/anderson-family-picnic/last-tango-in-providencehttps://soundcloud.com/anderson-family-picnic/the-dropout as a sneak peak. This intrumental surf-rock band has been around for years, at least since 2005, and they just won a Whalie Award in the Best Rock category. Cover is $5. Doors open at 9 pm, and this show is 21+.

On Sunday night, Sandman and Mike (http://sandmanmusic.net/) will return to Perks & Corks in Westerly for their second show there in about 3 weeks. While I am recommending local music CDs, I should mention that Sandy’s album is called “Horses to Water”, and  it’s full of the good songs and stories that you’ll hear so much of at Sunday’s show. Sandman plays guitar and sings, while Mike Palazzolo plays bass and does backing vocals.  (Both of them will also be appearing as members of the Hoolios on Saturday at Captain Scott’s.) They will play from 8 to 11 pm on Sunday. Perks & Corks is located at 62 High Street in Westerly.

Anne Castellano is a New London songwriter and musician who has played in several bands over the years (the Uninformed, the Skin Walkers, and the Cavities). She has been performing as a solo artist since 2007 but is currently rehearsing with her new band Anne Castellano and the Smoke.

In 2010 she released a full-length self-produced CD entitled “What’s Been Going On” on the New London-based Cosmodemonic Telegraph label. She is a 30-year veteran of college radio, and is currently doing the Deranged Radio Show on alternate Tuesday evenings from 6-9pm at WCNI 90.9 FM in New London.

She grew up in New Fairfield, CT in a musical family, with a father who played guitar and listened to country artists such as Hank Williams and Patsy Cline, and a mother who loved Elvis Presley. Involvement in band and chorus in high school led to membership in the UCONN Marching Band and a two-week tour of Europe performing with the band in the early 1980s.

Anne moved to New London in 1987 because of the vibrant local music scene there. In 2005 she began putting together a concert calendar to get the word out about all the local band shows that were taking place in the area. She enjoys books, animals, hiking, and the beach, and sees as much live original music as her “day job” schedule permits.
