Anne’s Shore & More #97 – June 20 2013

Anne’s Shore & More #97 – June 20 2013

This won’t be the busiest of weekends, but there are a couple of good shows happening on Saturday in New London. Beginning in the afternoon and continuing into the night, the 7th Annual Traditions festival takes place at the Hygienic Art Park. Traditions is a daylong folk/roots festival that will showcase a variety of genres ranging from spirituals to punk-bluegrass this year with many styles in between. This year’s festival is dedicated to the speedy recovery of David Lamb of the band Brown Bird, who is beginning treatment for leukemia. Brown Bird was originally scheduled to play the festival, but Anais Mitchell ( has stepped in to fill the slot due to their unfortunate cancellation. Her folk opera “Hadestown”, a modern retelling of the Orpheus myth, made “Best of 2010″ lists in multiple UK publications. Music will begin at 2 pm with Pesky J. Nixon ( They are a folk/roots/bluegrass quartet that mixes rich harmonies, a variety of strings, zydeco-style accordion, and tribal percussion. Next up will be Paper Hill Casket Company (, a six-piece New England band playing “progressive Americana”, at 3 pm. The band released “Undertow”, an 11-song CD, in the fall of 2012. Oh Cassius (, who are singer-songwriters and multi-instrumentalists Meredith DiMenna and John Torres, will play next at 4 pm. They are currently working on their debut album after a successful crowdfunding campaign. New Haven’s Goodnight Blue Moon (, an indie-folk band formed in 2009, will play a set at 5 pm. They recently added a violinist and a drummer, which makes them a seven-piece band. Their first album, “How Long”, also features a full string section on several songs. Tim Eriksen (, a self-described “hardcore Americana” artist who was called “one of the best voices in music” by T-Bone Burnett, will follow at 6 pm. He is the former frontman of Cordelia’s Dad, and has shared the stage with both Kurt Cobain and Doc Watson. Anais Mitchell will perform at 7:30 pm, and O’Death ( is up last at 9 pm. The band is from Brooklyn, NY, and their music mixes folk and Americana with elements of punk and metal. They have been playing together for ten years, and have done several shows in New London in the past. Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door. Advance tickets are available at!  The Hygienic Art Park is an all ages venue and the weather WILL cooperate.

Also on Saturday night, New London band Hand Grenade Serenade ( will play a reunion show at the El ‘n’ Gee Club. The band has a new “unreleased” five song EP that you can download from their Bandcamp site. (I’m not sure how long ago they split up, but if I had to guess I’d say it has probably been around five or six years.)  Also on the bill will be These Furious Days (, Ask the Dead, and Dead City Riot. These Furious Days is a hardcore punk band from Hartford that has been around for fifteen years. They are “3 laid back dudes” who play fast and agressive music and love guitar solos. Ask the Dead (, a Providence band that bills itself as “Husker Du covering the first Foo Fighters album”, is finishing up their second EP and touring the Northeast this month. They took their name from an Ernest Hemingway quote. Dead City Riot ( is a CT skacore band whose 3-song EP is available for download on their Bandcamp site. The bands will start promptly at 9:30 pm.

Anne Castellano is a New London songwriter and musician who has played in several bands over the years (the Uninformed, the Skin Walkers, and the Cavities). She has been performing as a solo artist since 2007 but is currently rehearsing with her new band Anne Castellano and the Smoke.

In 2010 she released a full-length self-produced CD entitled “What’s Been Going On” on the New London-based Cosmodemonic Telegraph label. She is a 30-year veteran of college radio, and is currently doing the Deranged Radio Show on alternate Tuesday evenings from 6-9pm at WCNI 90.9 FM in New London.

She grew up in New Fairfield, CT in a musical family, with a father who played guitar and listened to country artists such as Hank Williams and Patsy Cline, and a mother who loved Elvis Presley. Involvement in band and chorus in high school led to membership in the UCONN Marching Band and a two-week tour of Europe performing with the band in the early 1980s.

Anne moved to New London in 1987 because of the vibrant local music scene there. In 2005 she began putting together a concert calendar to get the word out about all the local band shows that were taking place in the area. She enjoys books, animals, hiking, and the beach, and sees as much live original music as her “day job” schedule permits.
