Anne’s Shore & More #98 – June 27 2013

Anne’s Shore & More #98 – June 27 2013

Summer is here, and there’s a lot going on this weekend. On Friday night, get the weekend started at Captain Scott’s Lobster Dock in New London, where the Rivergods ( will be performing, with the music beginning at 6:30 pm. This is a great place to relax and see live music on the Thames River in a picturesque outdoor setting. There is a pavilion for the bands to play under, so shows are rain or shine. There is no cover charge, all ages are welcome, and local seafood lovers say that the food is excellent. You can also BYOB. What’s not to love?

Also on Friday night, the Root Farmers will play at the Stone Fleet Tavern in New London, in the location that used to be Zavala’s (and before that, Thames Landing) at 2 State Street. This show is part of a new Friday night roots music series that began a few weeks ago. Craig Edwards and his band will be playing old time fiddle tunes and blues, arranged for a four-piece string band. The show starts at 7 pm and continues until 10 pm. Cover charge (if any) is unknown.

Later on Friday night, Incognito Sofa Love ( and Wild Sun play the Oasis Pub in New London. Wild Sun ( is from Westerly, and they last played at the Oasis as the Cake Bros. The Cake Bros. coincidentally have a song called “Wild Sun” available for download from their Bandcamp site. ISL has been playing the occasional show in New London since returning to the area and reuniting a little over a year ago. Cover is $5 and the show starts at 9 pm.

The Mystic Blues Festival will be taking place Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at three different ticketed venues in Mystic and Westerly: the Mystic Shipyard West, Olde Mistick Village Arts Cinema, and the Knickerbocker Cafe (Westerly, RI). There are also ten other “host” venues, featuring blues artists and free admission during the festival. All the details on tickets, parking, shuttles, etc. can be found at Check out the calendar section of this blog (below) for a schedule of bands at the ticketed venues. A full list of entertainment, including the host venues, can be found on the festival website. There is also an online auction taking place (, with proceeds to benefit two local charities, one each in Mystic and Westerly. In Mystic, they are supporting Sails Up 4 Cancer, an organization that funds cancer research through the art and enjoyment of sailing. In Westerly, proceeds will support local beach restoration, as the area continues to rebuild from Hurricane Sandy.

On Saturday night, it’s the first show of a new music series at the Connecticut College Arboretum called Music in the Meadow. The concert takes place in the outdoor theater at the Arboretum, and features three local roots/Americana acts: the Hoolios (, Dogbite (, and Nancy Parent ( Tickets are $10, and are available in advance at the Arboretum office in the Olin Science Center. Details on tickets and parking are here: Bring a chair or blanket to sit on, maybe a picnic, and if you have ever been to the Arboretum you already know to bring insect repellent. (You definitely will want to do that.) Gates open at 6 pm, and music starts at 6:30. Rain date is Sunday.

And now, a bit of self-promotion, because there will be a show on Saturday night at 33 Golden Street in New London with the Paul Brockett Roadshow ( and Anne Castellano and the Smoke (, which just happens to be my band. I’ll be bringing a brand new beautiful guitar, we have some new songs, and the band has also just finished recording an album. We are really looking forward to sharing a bill with our friends PBR, who haven’t been playing a lot of shows recently, so that makes this even more special. My band will open the show at 10 pm, followed by Paul, Meghan, and Dave, who are always on top of their game. Cover is $5 and will be worth every penny. We love playing at 33 and this show will rock hard! See you there.

Anne Castellano is a New London songwriter and musician who has played in several bands over the years (the Uninformed, the Skin Walkers, and the Cavities). She has been performing as a solo artist since 2007 but is currently rehearsing with her new band Anne Castellano and the Smoke.

In 2010 she released a full-length self-produced CD entitled “What’s Been Going On” on the New London-based Cosmodemonic Telegraph label. She is a 30-year veteran of college radio, and is currently doing the Deranged Radio Show on alternate Tuesday evenings from 6-9pm at WCNI 90.9 FM in New London.

She grew up in New Fairfield, CT in a musical family, with a father who played guitar and listened to country artists such as Hank Williams and Patsy Cline, and a mother who loved Elvis Presley. Involvement in band and chorus in high school led to membership in the UCONN Marching Band and a two-week tour of Europe performing with the band in the early 1980s.

Anne moved to New London in 1987 because of the vibrant local music scene there. In 2005 she began putting together a concert calendar to get the word out about all the local band shows that were taking place in the area. She enjoys books, animals, hiking, and the beach, and sees as much live original music as her “day job” schedule permits.
