Anne’s Shore & More #99 – July 5 2013

Anne’s Shore & More #99 – July 5 2013

It’s the weekend before Sailfest, but there’s no time for resting up, because there is still plenty of live music happening in the New London area. On Friday, singer/songwriter Marco Frucht ( will perform in downtown New London on Parade Plaza (across from the train station) for the Field of Greens Farmer’s Market ( This is a free event, and Marco will play from 11 am to 1 pm. Hours for the market are 10 am to 2 pm.

On Friday evening, Jim Carpenter ( will play at the Stone Fleet Tavern in New London, located at 2 State Street, for their Friday night acoustic music series. Guest vocalists will include Jake Carpenter and Mike Derry, with additional guest appearances possible. Jim Carpenter, who usually performs with his band the Hoolios, is a gifted songwriter. He also has a lot of talented friends and family, so this is guaranteed to be a great show. The music starts at 7 pm and continues until 10 pm, and there is no cover.

Later on Friday night, there’s a three-band show at 33 Golden Street in New London with Herff Jones, Fatal Film, and Straight to VHS. Mystic’s Herff Jones ( will be playing their first show in New London in over a year (they recently reunited), and this will also be their first show ever at 33.  Straight to VHS ( took home three awards at the 2013 Whalies, including Best Indie Rock and Rock/Pop Album of the Year for “Rewinder”.

Word is that Fatal Film ( is finishing up a brand new album, to be released in the fall. Their recent shows have included a lot of new songs. Cover is $5 and the show starts at 9 pm.

Also on Friday night,  Gene Gnomes (, the Vultures (http://, and the Theatre Zombies ( will all be playing at the Bank Street Cafe in New London. Gene Gnomes are a three-piece New Haven band with guitar, drums, and tuba instead of bass. They released a full-length album called “Gnomenclature” in December 2012. New Haven’s Vultures have put out several EPs and full length albums, with the most recent release, “Chingus”, coming out in 2009 on Safety Meeting Records. Theatre Zombies are a horror-punk trio from Noroton Heights, CT, which is between Norwalk and Stamford (I actually had to Google it, and I have lived in CT all my life). They have two albums out, both of which are available on Bandcamp, and they are planning to release a third by year end. This looks to be a really interesting evening of music. The show starts at 10 pm and cover is $5.

Now that June is over, maybe we’ll finally have some decent weather for outdoor music. On Saturday, Van Hayride and Full Moon Jamboree will be doing a show at the Hygienic Art Park in New London. Van Hayride ( is a band from Brooklyn with Jack Grace performing country versions of Van Halen songs. Really. The band also plans to expand their repertoire by adding songs by Barry Manilow, AC/DC, Black Sabbath, and others. Not sure if they have done that yet, but there’s only one way to find out. Full Moon Jamboree ( will be getting things started that night  around 7:30 pm. Full Moon Jamboree is a collaboration of some of New London’s best musicians playing old-time country classics and originals. The band’s  lineup is Paul Brockett on electric guitar and vocals, Joey Macrino on acoustic guitar and vocals, Dave Anderson on bass, and Tim O’Connor on drums. They are hinting on the Facebook event page that they will be re-creating their Hank Williams tribute, where they invite members of the audience on stage to sing their favorite Hank tunes. If this sounds like fun, you are probably right. The show is all ages, and beer and wine will be sold to those of legal drinking age. Gates open at 7 pm and cover charge is unknown.

Anne Castellano is a New London songwriter and musician who has played in several bands over the years (the Uninformed, the Skin Walkers, and the Cavities). She has been performing as a solo artist since 2007 but is currently rehearsing with her new band Anne Castellano and the Smoke.

In 2010 she released a full-length self-produced CD entitled “What’s Been Going On” on the New London-based Cosmodemonic Telegraph label. She is a 30-year veteran of college radio, and is currently doing the Deranged Radio Show on alternate Tuesday evenings from 6-9pm at WCNI 90.9 FM in New London.

She grew up in New Fairfield, CT in a musical family, with a father who played guitar and listened to country artists such as Hank Williams and Patsy Cline, and a mother who loved Elvis Presley. Involvement in band and chorus in high school led to membership in the UCONN Marching Band and a two-week tour of Europe performing with the band in the early 1980s.

Anne moved to New London in 1987 because of the vibrant local music scene there. In 2005 she began putting together a concert calendar to get the word out about all the local band shows that were taking place in the area. She enjoys books, animals, hiking, and the beach, and sees as much live original music as her “day job” schedule permits.
