Anne’s Shore & More #105 – Aug 15 2013

So many shows this weekend! There are several early ones on Friday, at both traditional and non-traditional venues. The Rivergods ( will be doing their annual end-of-summer gig on Friday at Michael’s Dairy in New London, where you can have ice cream for dinner and see a great free outdoor show. The band will play from 6:30-8:30 and the weather should be perfect. This will be the Rivergods’ last full band show of the summer. They have a new EP coming out, hopefully soon, called “Aground”, and this would be a great opportunity to bug the band about a release date. Bring the kids, of course, and lawn chairs if you wish. Did I mention that the show is free? The ice cream is wonderful too (but not free).

On Friday night at Ocean Beach Park in New London, Josi Davis ( and her “Hot Damn” band (John Van Ness on drums, Max Kelly on guitar, and Dan Solomons on bass) will be playing at the 1st Annual New London Rotary Wine Tasting. The wine tasting includes over 60 wines, plus a selection of beer and spirits, hors d’oeuvres, and a silent auction. The event takes place from 6:30-9:30 pm at the Port ‘N’ Starboard, and all proceeds will benefit Camp Rotary, a summer program for New London youth. Tickets are $45 at the door, and Josi and her band will play from 7-8:30 pm.

Dogbite ( will also be playing on Friday night, making their first appearance at the Stone Fleet Tavern in New London (the former site of Zavala’s). Dogbite has released two albums, in 2005 and 2009, and a couple of singles. It’s good to see that they have been playing fairly often this summer. I know the guys in the band are very busy, but here’s hoping they have some new recordings coming out soon. The music starts at 7 pm and continues until 10 pm. There is no cover.

But wait, there’s more. Vince Thompson and friends ( are playing at Priam Vineyards in Colchester on Friday night. Vince will have the following great players: Andy Solberg on guitar and vocals (, Lou Bocciarelli on upright bass, Bob Metzger on pedal steel, guitar, and vocals, and Steve Peck on drums. The band will play under a tent if it rains, but so far the weather looks great. No outside beverages will be permitted. Wine and non-alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase, and there will also be a food truck on site. If you don’t already have a copy, I highly recommend picking up Vince’s “Hurricane” CD. His songs will stay with you. Tickets are $16 at the door.

On Saturday night, the Brian McKenzie Band ( will be playing at Sneekers Cafe in Groton. The band includes Jim Carpenter (of the Hoolios) on guitar, Vinny Pagano on drums, Caleb Cook on bass, and Lila Rose McKenzie O’Conner (Brian’s sister) on harmony vocals. Brian is a singer/songwriter from Providence whose music draws on influences such as Chris Isaak, Ryan Adams, Merle Haggard, and Johnny Cash. He released his third album, called “Resolution”, last November, and it earned him four spots on the Grammy Awards official ballot. Brian played Sneekers once before and I heard rave reviews of the show. Music continues from 8 pm-midnight, and there is no cover.

Over in New London on Saturday night, the Cavemen Go ( will play a reunion show at 33 Golden Street with the Lost Riots (  and M.T. Bearington ( All three bands on the bill are New Haven bands who have played New London often enough to be honorary locals. This will be the Cavemen Go’s first show in a year, but it’s a one-off so don’t miss it if you are a fan of the band. OK, it isn’t technically a reunion show because they never officially called it quits. But there won’t be another for a long while. The show starts at 9 pm and cover is $5.

Anne Castellano is a New London, CT songwriter and guitarist who fronts her own original band, Anne Castellano and the Smoke. She has also played in several other bands over the years (the Uninformed, the Skin Walkers, and the Cavities) and spent several years performing as a solo artist.

In 2010 she released a full-length self-produced CD entitled “What’s Been Going On”. Anne also collaborated with Hugh Birdsall (Dogbite, the Reducers) on an EP called “In the Dark”, released in 2012 under the name SheSaidHeSaid. She is a 30-year veteran of college radio, and is currently doing the Deranged Radio Show on alternate Tuesday evenings from 6-9 pm at WCNI 90.9 FM in New London.

She grew up in New Fairfield, CT in a musical family, with a father who played guitar and listened to country artists such as Hank Williams and Patsy Cline, and a mother who loved Elvis Presley. Involvement in band and chorus in high school led to membership in the UCONN Marching Band and a two-week tour of Europe performing with the band in the early 1980s.

Anne moved to New London in 1987 because of the vibrant local music scene there. She began putting together her weekly concert calendar in 2005, to get the word out about all the local band shows that were taking place in the area. She enjoys books, animals, hiking, and the beach, and sees as much live music as her “day job” schedule permits.
