Anne’s Shore & More #107 – Aug 29 2013

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE WEEK

Anne Castellano

Anne Castellano

The final weekend of summer is upon us, so get out and see some live original music. On Friday night, Ben and Nancy Parent of the Rivergods (http://therivergods.com/) will play an acoustic show at the Stone Fleet Tavern in New London, with Dan Spano joining them on keyboards. They will be playing a variety of material that will include some Rivergods songs, some of Nancy’s solo tunes (http://nancyparent.wordpress.com/), and some covers. This is a weekly acoustic series, and there is no cover. The music starts at 7 pm and continues until 10 pm.

Also on Friday night, the Hoolios (www.locodare.com) will be appearing at Steak Loft in Mystic. They generally play this venue as an “acoustic” band, with Bill Light (slide guitar) and Ron Lewis (drums) taking the night off. Jim Carpenter’s son Jake has been sitting in (literally) on cajón for these shows, and he’ll likely swap with his dad for a bit so he can also sing and play guitar on a few songs. There is no cover, and the music starts at 7 pm. Steak Loft closes early, so shows are over by 10 pm.

Coming up on Saturday night, the Hygienic Art Park in New London will host Lipbone Redding (http://lipbone.com/web2012/index.html) and Dogbite (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Dogbite-Band/108188045904888). Lipbone Redding is well known for his vocal abilities, which include throat singing, bass and beat-boxing, and his “astonishingly realistic lip-tromboning”. He began by singing and playing in the subways of Manhattan, and has since traveled the world performing his music. Lipbone has released eight albums and many live recordings. Dogbite has been playing shows in the New London area for about ten years now, doing a mix of roots, folk, rock, rockabilly, blues, and more, and doing it all extremely well. They have released two albums and several singles, and I hear they have a bunch of new material. Beer, wine, and snacks will be available for purchase. Gates open at 7:00, and Dogbite plays first, at 7:30 pm. The Art Park is a beautiful outdoor venue and all ages are welcome.  Admission is by donation, usually $8-10.

Up in Willimantic on Saturday, there will be a benefit for the Windham Harm Reduction Coalition (www.windhamhrc.org), with seven bands playing at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. The bands will be Sunshine Ears Featuring Expressions of Afraid of Sound (10:30, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pka9XUOxV7E), Night of the Rabbit (9:45, http://www.facebook.com/nightoftherabbit), Spit-Take (9:00, http://www.youtube.com/watch?), Zoo Front (8:15, www.zoofront.bandcamp.com), the Lonesome While (7:30, https://www.facebook.com/TheLonesomeWhile), Shrinnirs (6:45, http://www.myspace.com/shrinnirs), Baseball Camp Nurse (6:00, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pcO3OlfukhA&list=FL1i8IamVyJLA_Kgyv0jxLMg&feature=mh_lolz). There will also be a silent art auction, raffle prizes and a cash bar. The event takes place from 4 pm until midnight, with bands starting at 6:00. The church is located at 220 Valley Street.  Admission is $10.

On Sunday, celebrate (or more appropriately, mourn) the end of summer at Captain Scott’s Lobster Dock in New London. They are calling it the Labor Day Music Festival, and the Hoolios (www.locodare.com), the MacLeans (https://www.facebook.com/pages/The-MacLeans/255791447789707), and Sandra Levine (https://www.facebook.com/sandra.levine.35?fref=ts) will be playing. The MacLean sisters have been working on an album for quite some time, so perhaps they will have some news as to its release date. And if you are keeping track, this will be the Hoolios’ fifth show in eleven days. They play last, and if past shows at Captain Scott’s are any indication, they will hopefully keep playing until late. This show is all ages and you are welcome to BYOB. There is no cover, and folks say the food is excellent. The band plays under a pavilion, so this is a rain or shine event. Sandra Levine opens the show at 3 pm, followed by the MacLeans, and then the Hoolios.

Anne Castellano is a New London, CT songwriter and guitarist who fronts her own original band, Anne Castellano and the Smoke. She has also played in several other bands over the years (the Uninformed, the Skin Walkers, and the Cavities) and spent several years performing as a solo artist.

In 2010 she released a full-length self-produced CD entitled “What’s Been Going On”. Anne also collaborated with Hugh Birdsall (Dogbite, the Reducers) on an EP called “In the Dark”, released in 2012 under the name SheSaidHeSaid. She is a 30-year veteran of college radio, and is currently doing the Deranged Radio Show on alternate Tuesday evenings from 6-9 pm at WCNI 90.9 FM in New London.

She grew up in New Fairfield, CT in a musical family, with a father who played guitar and listened to country artists such as Hank Williams and Patsy Cline, and a mother who loved Elvis Presley. Involvement in band and chorus in high school led to membership in the UCONN Marching Band and a two-week tour of Europe performing with the band in the early 1980s.

Anne moved to New London in 1987 because of the vibrant local music scene there. She began putting together her weekly concert calendar in 2005, to get the word out about all the local band shows that were taking place in the area. She enjoys books, animals, hiking, and the beach, and sees as much live music as her “day job” schedule permits.
