HOT Rewind

Ron Kuczuk

Ron Kuczuk

First off, in sad news, the CT music community lost Ron Kuczuk, guitarist for extreme metal band, Bonded Through Hate, and formerly of Tyrant Trooper and Slumlord.  I did not have the pleasure of knowing him.  However, I have read the out-pouring of sympathies from his family, friends, and fellow musicians.  I think he was well-respected among his peers, highly-revered by his fans, and loved very much by his family.  That’s one hell of a legacy.  The LBR family offers our sincerest condolences to Ron’s family and friends.  RIP.  \m/

Jiminy Crickets, CT!  You’re really doing your best to make the year-end, best-of lists very difficult to compile!  Just this week, I’ve listened to CDs coming out from Backyard Committee (see below for link) and Branchwater and the latest from Hubbell Mountain (see below for link) and Head With Wings (a nominee for CTMA Best New Band and Best other).  Seriously great shit!

I WENT TO THE RACES in Saratoga.  Fancy chapeau and all.  I bet on “Lead Singer”.  Winning until the last turn.  Last Fucking Turn.  Came in last.  Epic.  Fail.  It clearly illustrates why I shouldn’t date lead singers either.  #justsayin

WE’VE BEEN PROFILING all of the CTMA nominees from each category on our FB page.  We are posting videos from each of the 5 nominees in all 19 categories.  Check it out!  There’s some great music waiting for you!

Dropkick Murphys

Dropkick Murphys

DUDE, I RAGED to the Dropkick Murphys at Ives Concert Park on August 22!  What an amazing show.  It was my first.  I held my ground right up against the bar center stage as the testosterone around me went ballistic!  I was actually sore a few days later from tensing to keep my balance!  Ives is a great venue.  Nice lawn (they have seating depending on the band) and a MOAT – yep, a moat! – between the stage and the audience.  Ives is located in Danbury so if you’re in that area of the state (or not!), make it a point to check out a show during season!

Shag Frenzy at Sully's

BACON.  RECORDS.  BRUNCH.  I finally made it there last Sunday.  What the hell was I thinking in not going before?  Good friends.  Bacon.  Vinyl for sale.  Bacon.  DJ Shag Frenzy spinning awesome brunch tunes.  Bacon.  Sunshine.  Bacon.  Mimosas and Bloodies (and shots of Jameson!).  Bacon.  Bacon and egg pizzas freshly made at Lena’s next store.  Bacon.  Bright sunshine on the outdoor patio.  Did I mention the big piles of BACON???  I scored a couple of great albums and had a lovely Sunday Funday.  You should do it too on September 8!

MIKE AND I FILMED our latest edition of Scene Queen lsg yesterday with Tetramer at their practice space on Pratt St in Hartford (so much goes on there!)  What a great time.  The gents are promoting their debut CD, Another Public Meltdown.  What a great time!  The guys are good sports and they even performed my favorite song from the album, “The Relic”.  Look for that episode soon! In the meantime, have a listen to that album!

AS WE EASE OUT OF August, September welcomes some great events.  One of those is Hartford Hodgepodge.  In its second year, it’s a weekly street festival on Pratt Street in Hartford that has featured local music with vendors of all kinds, food (think NoRA Cupcake truck!), and drink (delish concoctions from Onyx Moonshine).  Hodgepodge starts Sunday, September 22 and runs for 6 consecutive Sundays (weather permitting). More details to come as they firm up.

Jose Oyola

Jose Oyola

I TOOK A TRIP to outerspace at The Spaceland Ballroom in Hamden 8/24 when I went to see the spectacle that was Spacetron.  Brain child of Taco Hut Records and Promotions and mastermind, Jose Oyola, it was a fun night full of music, lights, hooping from sassy Miss Veronica Vixen, and I’m pretty sure I saw a little green man somewhere!  The lineup was impressive: Sun Dagger and Hubbell Mountain along with CT Music Award nominees Head with Wings (Best New Band, Best Other) and Jose Oyola and the Astronauts (Best New Band).  I am remise that I arrived too late to see Sun Dagger because I dig them.  But, the rest of the bands put on excellent sets. I’ve seen Jose and the Astronauts before (and understand the nod for Best New Band) and I was equally impressed with Head with Wings.  I’ve been listening to their latest CD in my car this week (see below).  No slouches themselves, you can dig the new Hubbell Mountain CD at the link below.  Well done, Mr. Oyola (aka to me as Sr. Peligroso)!

BACKYARD COMMITTEE is releasing a new 8-song CD called “Festival”.  This will be a sophomore release for them.  You can hear it before you buy it by streaming it here.  Once you hear it, you’ll want to grab the down load when they perform with Seth Adam & Elle Sera for a multi-CD release show on October 5 at Spaceland Ballroom in Hamden.

AND SPEAKING of Seth Adam, he’s looking for your support in helping to get his album out.  Details are here in this link.  Hope you can lend him a hand!

As always, occupy a venue and get out there and support local!!

Peace, lsg

“Spot”light on… RE:CREATE CT

Earlier this year, I attended the first Re:Create event in Elizabeth Park.  It was a wonderful day that involved a natural market complete with food vendors, crafts and art, and live music.  There were folks doing group yoga and zumba.  Actually, there were huge crowds doing both!  It really was incredible what was accomplished with this first run.  I hear it will become a two-day event!

Re:Create CT is about to launch a state-wide network consisting of holistic practitioners, sustainable lifestyle providers, local food growers, and upcycle experts dedicated to building healthier, greener communities. Stephanie Jarm and her partner, Kim Gedney, are currently competing for a $5,000 prize through reSET’s Social Enterprise Challenge.  They are in competition against other social entrepreneurs committed to building successful businesses with purpose.

Re:Create needs your help.  And it’s all very simple.

The video below is part of their submission to win this upstart funding.  By simply “liking” the video, you can support their efforts to create a movement towards healthier, more holistic, and sustainable lifestyles for our community.  That’s it.  That’s all you have to do!  So, watch the video and hit like!  Re:Create thanks you!

Filmed at the Vision and Grit festival held August 9 and 10, this is the first time Isaac’s been filmed doing a solo with his bad ass EWI on the song DMJ!  Isaac and his quartet are CT Music Award nominees in the “Best Jazz” and “Best Jam Band” categories.  Good luck to them on September 17 at the Bushnell in Hartford!

Lisa Sanchez Gonzalez – lsg Original

Lover of music and the visual arts, Lisa Sanchez Gonzalez is the insanity behind lsg original photography. lsg specializes in artist and performer photography. She’s had the honor of photographing national bands such as Weezer, Snoop Dogg, A Simple Plan, Paramore, Whitesnake, Wye Oak, and The Antlers along with countless local bands and performers.

Hailing from Hartford, CT, Lisa is a life- long music connoisseur. Growing up, her mother exposed her to everything from The Stones to Simon and Garfunkel to Earth, Wind, and Fire to Loretta Lynn…and everything in between. No genre was left unexplored in her vinyl collection. She saw her first concert at 14…Rod Stewart at the (then called) Hartford Civic Center. Thirty years later, it’s still her favorite pastime.

Lisa has two kids (grown!) and a day job. Her loves of music and photography have melded into a second career. And her love of CT keeps her promoting and pushing for local artists and performers. Lisa spends the greater part of her free time seeing and shooting live bands, performers, and artists and art work…and purchasing vinyl!
