There are at least eighteen bands playing in downtown New London on Friday night, and another seven on Saturday. Ridiculous, in a very good way. So here’s what’s happening. On Friday night, there will be a big multi-band show at the El ‘n’ Gee Club. The Gee is closing at the end of the month, and until then there will be quite a few shows. Some of those will be benefits for the owners of the club to help reduce their sizable debt. For awhile there was talk of saving the club, and a “Save the Gee” CD compilation ( came out (with about 81 tracks, if I counted correctly) in an attempt to do just that, but the place is definitely closing. It’s sad, but it’s happened many times before and it has always reopened. Fingers crossed that someone cool will buy it and start booking bands there again soon. The El ‘n’ Gee Club is actually the reason I decided to move to New London in 1987. But I digress. The bands playing on Friday night will be Sadplant ( , Payback (, Thee Enemies (, Progress (, Blastmat (, Buckshot Facelift (, and Idiot Excuse ( Bridgeport hardcore band Payback, who got started way back in 1989, is doing a reunion show. And if you are an Enemies fan, this will probably be their last show for a long time, so catch them while you still can. The show is all ages and it starts at 7 pm. Cover is $5.

Practically across the street from the Gee, there is also a show at 33 Golden Street on Friday, with five bands. The Ramparts (, a punk band from Chicopee MA, will open the show, followed by Javier & Los DishDogs ( Next up is Madison riotgrrl trio 404ERROR (, then We Own Land, from Newport. Closing the show will be Dressed For The Occasion (, a Boston band who cites Johnny Cash, The Beatles, Hank Williams, and The Doors as influences. Cover is $5 and the show starts at 8:30 pm.

Washington Street Coffee House is also having live music on Friday evening, and this show will commemorate Daniel Pearl World Music Day. Daniel Pearl World Music Day ( is an international network of concerts that use the power of music to reaffirm a commitment to tolerance and humanity. The purpose is to raise awareness, and 129 countries are now participating. Acoustic acts performing at the coffee house will be Gaetano, who opens the show at 6:00 pm, followed by Bruce McDermott at 6:30, ½ Maggie’s Guitar ( at 7:00, and Golden Ratio ( playing last at 7:30 pm. Washington Street Coffee House is the original/former location of Bean and Leaf, on the aforementioned Washington Street in New London. Admission is free, and I hear the food is excellent.

At the Oasis Pub, New London garage-rock trio Straight to VHS will be sharing the bill with Monster Eats Pilot on Friday. Straight to VHS ( is readying a new record, so they will be taking a few months off from playing out. Monster Eats Pilot ( is an indie rock/garage trio from New Haven. The show starts at 10 pm and cover is $5.

On Saturday night, another big show takes place at the El ‘n’ Gee Club. The bands will be  Dead City Riot (, Taxi Driver (, Cry Havoc!( , Damn Broads (, Horns of Ormus (, Bragging Rights (, and the Coquettes ( They are calling this one Punktober Fest. Cover is $8 and doors open at 7 pm. All ages welcome.

Anne Castellano is a New London, CT songwriter and guitarist who fronts her own original band, Anne Castellano and the Smoke. She has also played in several other bands over the years (the Uninformed, the Skin Walkers, and the Cavities) and spent several years performing as a solo artist.

In 2010 she released a full-length self-produced CD entitled “What’s Been Going On”. Anne also collaborated with Hugh Birdsall (Dogbite, the Reducers) on an EP called “In the Dark”, released in 2012 under the name SheSaidHeSaid. She is a 30-year veteran of college radio, and is currently doing the Deranged Radio Show on alternate Tuesday evenings from 6-9 pm at WCNI 90.9 FM in New London.

She grew up in New Fairfield, CT in a musical family, with a father who played guitar and listened to country artists such as Hank Williams and Patsy Cline, and a mother who loved Elvis Presley. Involvement in band and chorus in high school led to membership in the UCONN Marching Band and a two-week tour of Europe performing with the band in the early 1980s.

Anne moved to New London in 1987 because of the vibrant local music scene there. She began putting together her weekly concert calendar in 2005, to get the word out about all the local band shows that were taking place in the area. She enjoys books, animals, hiking, and the beach, and sees as much live music as her “day job” schedule permits.
