Anne’s Shore & More #115 – Oct 24 2013

Anne’s Shore & More #115 – Oct 24 2013

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE WEEK

Anne at The Whalie's

Anne Castellano

It’s another busy weekend ahead, with lots of shows on both Friday and Saturday nights. It’s also the final weekend of operation for the El ‘n’ Gee Club in New London. On Friday night, the Hempsteadys (https://www.facebook.com/thehempsteadys) play their final Halloween Ball at the Gee, with Riki Rocksteady (http://www.reverbnation.com/rikirocksteady) joining them on the bill. New London’s reggae/ska favorites the Hempsteadys are a big band that draws a large crowd, so they should be great on the Gee stage. More bands are expected to be added, but the full lineup has not been announced as of yet. Costumes are encouraged. Cover is $5 for those 21 and up, and $10 for under 21. The show starts at 9 pm.Also on Friday night, Jim Carpenter (www.locodare.com) and friends will be at Steak Loft in Mystic. This will be an acoustic show, with members of the Hoolios and other special guests. Jim’s son Jake, a musical chip off the old block, often sits in on cajón and takes over the band for a few of his own songs as well. There is no cover and the show starts at 7 pm. Music is over by 10 pm.

Strange Brew Pub in Norwich has a show on Friday night, with Matzah Cigar and the Van Burens performing. The Van Burens (http://www.reverbnation.com/vanburenmusic) are from Boston, and they play everything from funk to prog rock to electronic dance music. Matzah Cigar (http://matzahcigar.bandcamp.com/) is an extremely talented young art/progressive trio from New London. If you aren’t familiar with the place, Strange Brew Pub recently opened in the location of the former High Noon Saloon, on West Main Street. Some personnel remain, including the person who does the booking. This place is definitely trying to promote live and local music and I wish them all the best. The show starts at 8 pm and cover is $5.

On Saturday night, there’s a Halloween show at the Hygienic Galleries in New London. It’s a CD release show for Pocket Vinyl and also for Elison Jackson (http://elisonjackson.com/), both of whom will be performing at the event. Pocket Vinyl (http://www.pocketvinyl.com/) will be releasing a CD called “Death Anxiety”, while Elison Jackson’s new one is called “Do Not Fear To Kill A Dead Man” (http://elisonjackson.bandcamp.com/album/do-not-fear-to-kill-a-dead-man). This will also be Pocket Vinyl’s first ever full band show. Both of the bands will have their new CDs available for purchase at the show. All ages are welcome. Beer and wine will be sold to those 21 and over with valid ID. Admission is $7, or $5 for anyone in costume.

Also on Saturday night, there’s a big show at 33 Golden Street in New London with four bands playing garage rock, garage punk, garage pop, and “dirty garage soul”. New London’s Fatal Film (http://fatalfilm.com/) will be joined by New Haven garage punks the Lost Riots (www.thelostriots.bandcamp.com), Brooklyn band the Recordettes (http://therecordettes.bandcamp.com/), and John Paul Keith & the One Four Fives (http://johnpaulkeith.net/main/), who are from Memphis. The Recordettes just played a showcase at CMJ, and the band’s friendship with John Paul Keith helped bring the Memphis band to New London. The Lost Riots, who were voted best punk band in CT at this year’s CT Music Awards,  have done previous shows with the Recordettes and the two bands have hit it off. Fatal Film has been talking about a new record for quite some time, so you are bound to hear some new tunes. Be sure to check out the new paint job on Matt Potter’s four-pickup DiPinto guitar. It really does look nice. Speaking of guitars, I hear the guitarist for the Recordettes has a cool one too. Cover is $5 and costumes are encouraged. Order of bands has not been decided at this time, but the first band plays at 9 pm. You will want to see all of them anyway, so get there early.

Over at the Oasis Pub in New London, Bear Hands (http://bearhandsband.bandcamp.com/) and Fake Babies (http://fakebabies.bandcamp.com/) will be playing. Bear Hands last performed in New London at the 2012 I AM Festival, where their set was moved from the main stage to the Oasis Pub because of rain. This will be the Brooklyn band’s last New England show of the year. New Haven’s Fake Babies has released three albums in the five years the band has been together, and they won Best R&B/Soul/Funk at the 2013 CT Music Awards. Get there early, as the Oasis is expecting to sell out. Cover is $8 and start time is 9 pm.

Anne Castellano is a New London, CT songwriter and guitarist who fronts her own original band, Anne Castellano and the Smoke. She has also played in several other bands over the years (the Uninformed, the Skin Walkers, and the Cavities) and spent several years performing as a solo artist.

In 2010 she released a full-length self-produced CD entitled “What’s Been Going On”. Anne also collaborated with Hugh Birdsall (Dogbite, the Reducers) on an EP called “In the Dark”, released in 2012 under the name SheSaidHeSaid. She is a 30-year veteran of college radio, and is currently doing the Deranged Radio Show on alternate Tuesday evenings from 6-9 pm at WCNI 90.9 FM in New London.

She grew up in New Fairfield, CT in a musical family, with a father who played guitar and listened to country artists such as Hank Williams and Patsy Cline, and a mother who loved Elvis Presley. Involvement in band and chorus in high school led to membership in the UCONN Marching Band and a two-week tour of Europe performing with the band in the early 1980s.

Anne moved to New London in 1987 because of the vibrant local music scene there. She began putting together her weekly concert calendar in 2005, to get the word out about all the local band shows that were taking place in the area. She enjoys books, animals, hiking, and the beach, and sees as much live music as her “day job” schedule permits.
