Anne’s Shore & More #117 – Nov 8 2013

Anne Castellano and the Smoke

Anne Castellano and the Smoke

There aren’t many shows happening this weekend, but there is one taking place on Friday night that’s especially important to me. My band, Anne Castellano & the Smoke, will be having a CD Release Party at 33 Golden Street in New London, where we’ll be celebrating the official release of our first album, “Electric”. We recorded, mixed, and mastered the 13-track album ourselves, between February and October 2013. The folks at WailingCity were kind enough to review it, and you can check out Adam’s review here at Smoke lead guitarist Vincent Tuckwood’s other band, Monkey68, will be opening Friday’s show at around 9:30 pm. Monkey68 ( is a trio, with Craig Johnson on bass and Anthony Alicchio on drums. Vince plays guitar and sings. The band was supposed to play at Sailfest but got rained out, so this will be the first opportunity most of us have had to see them. As a matter of fact, I have only seen Vince perform his songs solo acoustic. He’s a great songwriter, singer, and guitarist, and he and Tony have been playing together for years. Coincidentally, the Smoke’s drummer’s name is also Tony, so there will be drummers named Anthony (or Tony) in two out of three of the bands that night. New London scene veteran Craig joined Monkey68 earlier this year. Anne Castellano & the Smoke will play the middle set, getting started about 10:30 pm. New bass player Bruce Brown did a great job at last week’s Live Lunch Break show, and he’s getting better and better as he becomes more comfortable with the songs. Bruce also did the graphic design work for the “Electric” CD. Local favorites Street People ( will play last, around 11:45. Street People is a garage-pop band fronted by Jared Horner, formerly of Electric Noise Act, with Matt Potter (Fatal Film, Brazen Hussy, Conversion Party) on guitar, Sebastian Coppotelli (Fatal Film, Royale Brothers) on bass, and Jordan Harrelson (Chasing Trinity) on drums. Sebastian’s birthday is Thursday, but he will still be celebrating on Friday, so be sure to wish him a happy birthday. Cover is $5. Since this is a CD Release show, copies of “Electric” will be available for purchase, so don’t forget to pick up your copy.

The Oasis Pub has just announced a special two-day benefit for local couple Karrie and Isaac Bulger, which will be taking place on Friday and Saturday night at the club in New London. Against the odds, Karrie and Isaac had their first baby, Alice Josephine, who was born three months early and passed away less than two weeks later on October 29. Karrie and Isaac are beloved members of New London’s music and art communities, with Karrie hosting the popular Moon Cheese Baby radio show on WCNI and also creating art and photography under the name K-LAB. Isaac is also well known in the area as the frontman/singer of local powerhouse reggae/ska band the Hempsteadys. The proceeds from this benefit will help to offset Karrie and Isaac’s hospital and healthcare costs, as well as end-of-life arrangements for “Baby AJ”. The event will feature musical performances by some of Karrie and Isaac’s favorite bands. Performers announced so far are the Hempsteadys, Hand Grenade Serenade, and James Maple, with more to be added. There will also be food and raffles. The suggested donation at the door will be $5 (or more if you are able), with 100% of the door going to Karrie and Isaac. More details, including schedule of performers, will be announced as they are finalized. If you would like to donate to the raffle, please contact Carissa at 860-383-3520 or by email at Here is the link to the Facebook event page:

Anne Castellano is a New London, CT songwriter and guitarist who fronts her own original band, Anne Castellano and the Smoke. She has also played in several other bands over the years (the Uninformed, the Skin Walkers, and the Cavities) and spent several years performing as a solo artist.

In 2010 she released a full-length self-produced CD entitled “What’s Been Going On”. Anne also collaborated with Hugh Birdsall (Dogbite, the Reducers) on an EP called “In the Dark”, released in 2012 under the name SheSaidHeSaid. She is a 30-year veteran of college radio, and is currently doing the Deranged Radio Show on alternate Tuesday evenings from 6-9 pm at WCNI 90.9 FM in New London.

She grew up in New Fairfield, CT in a musical family, with a father who played guitar and listened to country artists such as Hank Williams and Patsy Cline, and a mother who loved Elvis Presley. Involvement in band and chorus in high school led to membership in the UCONN Marching Band and a two-week tour of Europe performing with the band in the early 1980s.

Anne moved to New London in 1987 because of the vibrant local music scene there. She began putting together her weekly concert calendar in 2005, to get the word out about all the local band shows that were taking place in the area. She enjoys books, animals, hiking, and the beach, and sees as much live music as her “day job” schedule permits.
