RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE WEEK

The upcoming weekend is the 35th annual Hygienic Art Show, which is one of the biggest events of the year in New London. It also brings with it all kinds of great music on both Friday and Saturday nights. Hygienic weekend is also the only reason I can think of to look forward to the bitter cold of January. The full schedule of events is available at Hygienic Art’s website (http://hygienic.ning.com/), and there is a lot going on. I’m going to concentrate on the live music shows, because that’s what I know best. On Friday night, the Hygienic Hootenanny, hosted by the Shoreline Acoustic Music Society, will take place at Dickson’s Tavern in New London (the former Bank Street Roadhouse). The show features eight local acts, with the full lineup of performers and set times listed below in the calendar section. Admission is free, but donations will go towards music in the Hygienic Art Park this summer. The theme is “drinking songs”, so you know this will be fun. For more information, contact Sherry Stidfole at sstidfole@earthlink.net. Showtime is from 7-10 pm.

There are other (non-Hygienic-related) shows going on as well this weekend. On Friday night, the recently reincarnated Blue Collar Happy Hour will be happening at the Six String Cafe in New London. This week’s band will be Preston Frantz Hellbent & Heartbreakin’ (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Preston-Frantz-Hellbent-Heartbreakin), with John Fries and Corina Malbaurn (www.johnfriesmusic.com) doing a short acoustic set to open the show. Preston is one of the founders of the series, and he fronts a great country band, with Corina on bass, Tim O’Connor on mandolin, Sandy “Sandman” Allen on lap steel, and Ken Atkins on lead guitar. You won’t even miss the drums, believe me. Music starts at 7 pm and continues until 10, and the kitchen will be open. There is no cover, but as always at the BCHH, you are encouraged to “TTB” (Tip the Band, Tip the Bartender).

On Saturday night, the big show will be taking place at the Crocker House Ballroom in New London, where seven local bands will perform in this year’s Rock Fix. This is always one of the best shows of the year, and the Crocker House is a great venue. The Paul Brockett Roadshow (http://www.paulbrockettroadshow.com/), Fatal Film (www.fatalfilm.com), the John Fries Band (www.johnfriesmusic.com), the Sue Menhart Band (www.suemenhart.com), Chris MacKay & the ToneShifters (http://www.toneshifters.com/), Violent Mae (https://www.facebook.com/VIOLENTMAE), and Somewhere in Time will provide the entertainment. (I’m thinking that Somewhere in Time is a new band without a website, since the only Facebook page I could find was for a Canadian metal band!) The venue is only a couple of blocks from the Hygienic Galleries, 33 Golden Street, and the Bulkeley House, so you can bounce between the various Hygienic and non-Hygienic events very easily. Saturday night is the opening night of the art show, and for some reason, it is always one of the coldest nights of the year. Dress for the weather, wear comfortable shoes, and you’ll be fine. Here are the set times:

7pm Somewhere in Time
7:45 Chris MacKay & the Tone Shifters
8:30 Sue Menhart Band
9:20 Violent Mae
10:10 John Fries Band
11:00 Fatal Film
11:50 Paul Brockett Roadshow

The show starts at 7 pm and continues until 1 am. All ages are welcome, with beer and wine available for purchase. You’ll want to bring some cash for merch and CDs too.

Also on Saturday night, the Rivergods (http://therivergods.com/) will be having a CD release party for their brand new four song EP “Never Grow Old” at the Bulkeley House in New London. The long-awaited CD was produced by Rivergod Ben Parent and Dennis Walley (of Dirt Road Radio). CDs will be available for purchase at the show, but if you can’t wait to hear it, you can listen and/or download it right now at http://therivergods.bandcamp.com/. Vincent Tuckwood’s trio Monkey68 (https://www.facebook.com/Monkey68Band) will be opening the show, with the Rivergods playing the middle set, and Ken Atkins & the Honky Tonk Kind (http://www.kenatkins.com/) will close out the night. It’s no secret that the Rivergods are one of my favorite local bands, and if you don’t know why, go see them and you’ll agree with me. In fact, all three bands will knock your socks off, and I’m not just saying that because Vince plays lead guitar in my band. He’s an excellent vocalist and songwriter. And you’re going to love the Honky Tonk Kind as well. There’s no cover, and the show starts at 8 pm.

Anne Castellano is a New London, CT songwriter and guitarist who fronts her own original band, Anne Castellano and the Smoke. She has also played in several other bands over the years (the Uninformed, the Skin Walkers, and the Cavities) and spent several years performing as a solo artist.

In 2010 she released a full-length self-produced CD entitled “What’s Been Going On”. Anne also collaborated with Hugh Birdsall (Dogbite, the Reducers) on an EP called “In the Dark”, released in 2012 under the name SheSaidHeSaid. She is a 30-year veteran of college radio, and is currently doing the Deranged Radio Show on alternate Tuesday evenings from 6-9 pm at WCNI 90.9 FM in New London.

She grew up in New Fairfield, CT in a musical family, with a father who played guitar and listened to country artists such as Hank Williams and Patsy Cline, and a mother who loved Elvis Presley. Involvement in band and chorus in high school led to membership in the UCONN Marching Band and a two-week tour of Europe performing with the band in the early 1980s.

Anne moved to New London in 1987 because of the vibrant local music scene there. She began putting together her weekly concert calendar in 2005, to get the word out about all the local band shows that were taking place in the area. She enjoys books, animals, hiking, and the beach, and sees as much live music as her “day job” schedule permits.
