RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE WEEK

The upcoming weekend isn’t the busiest, but there are a few shows you might want to check out. On Friday night, Josi Davis & Hot Damn! (https://www.facebook.com/josidavisandhotdamn) will be playing at the Steak Loft in Mystic. The band includes Max Kelly (Matzah Cigar) on guitar, Dan Solomons (Karl Kelly & Company) on bass, and John Van Ness (NE1, Vertigo) on drums. Josi Davis is a talented singer/songwriter/guitarist/pianist who released her debut album, “The Evolution of Love”, in February 2013. It was recorded live at Carl Franklin’s PWOP Studios in New London, and Josi won a 2013 Whalie Award for “Ivy Grows”, a single from that album. After her performance at the 1st Annual Mystic Blues Festival last summer, she was asked to sit on the advisory board for this year’s festival.  Friday’s show starts at 7 pm and continues until 10 pm, and there is no cover.

Also on Friday night, the John Fries Band (www.johnfriesmusic.com) will be at Sneekers Cafe in Groton. The most recent lineup of John’s band features Corina Malbaurn on bass and newest member Ben LaRose (Matzah Cigar, the Suicide Dolls) on drums. John is an amazing self-taught guitarist with a love for the blues, and he’s opened for such greats as Robert Cray and Bernie Worrell. Corina studied jazz performance and upright bass at McNally Smith College of Music and the University of Minnesota. She also currently plays in Hellbent and Heartbreakin’ and the MacLeans. Ben LaRose is one of the most in-demand drummers in the area, and also one of the youngest.  He’s been a finalist in the Guitar Center drum-off competitions more than once. From what I hear, the addition of Ben on drums has really fired up this band. The show starts at 9 pm and there is no cover.

At the Oasis Pub in New London, Roz and the Rice Cakes (http://www.thericecakes.com/) will play a show with Street People (http://streetpeople.bandcamp.com/) on Friday night. Street People is an indie garage/pop band that includes members of such notable New London bands as Fatal Film, the Hempsteadys, and Electric Noise Act. They released an album called “Dreams” in 2012. Roz and the Rice Cakes are from Providence, and they have been doing shows in New London for the past couple of years. They have a new album called “Need to Feed” coming out on CD and vinyl in April. The show starts at 9 pm and cover is $5.

On Saturday night, it’s the first show in awhile for Dirt Road Radio. They will be at Strange Brew in Norwich, along with the Jon Cumming Band. The Jon Cumming Band (http://joncummingband.com/) is an Americana band from Boston. Jon Cumming is a founding member of Hot Day at the Zoo, who won Best Americana at the 2013 New England Music Awards. He put together a support band of great musicians he has met on the road over the years, and they recorded a 15-song album in 2013. Along with the standard guitar, bass, and drums, the band includes mandolin, banjo, and fiddle. New London’s Dirt Road Radio (https://www.facebook.com/dirtroadradio) won a Whalie Award last year for Best Bluegrass/Folk Performance. The band has played a few shows at this venue, back when it was the High Noon Saloon, but they don’t do a lot of live shows. This one is definitely worth checking out. They have also been working on an album for quite a while now, so here’s a good opportunity to grill the band for info on when it will be released. The show starts at 9 pm and cover is $5.

Anne Castellano is a New London, CT songwriter and guitarist who fronts her own original band, Anne Castellano and the Smoke. She has also played in several other bands over the years (the Uninformed, the Skin Walkers, and the Cavities) and spent several years performing as a solo artist.

In 2010 she released a full-length self-produced CD entitled “What’s Been Going On”. Anne also collaborated with Hugh Birdsall (Dogbite, the Reducers) on an EP called “In the Dark”, released in 2012 under the name SheSaidHeSaid. She is a 30-year veteran of college radio, and is currently doing the Deranged Radio Show on alternate Tuesday evenings from 6-9 pm at WCNI 90.9 FM in New London.

She grew up in New Fairfield, CT in a musical family, with a father who played guitar and listened to country artists such as Hank Williams and Patsy Cline, and a mother who loved Elvis Presley. Involvement in band and chorus in high school led to membership in the UCONN Marching Band and a two-week tour of Europe performing with the band in the early 1980s.

Anne moved to New London in 1987 because of the vibrant local music scene there. She began putting together her weekly concert calendar in 2005, to get the word out about all the local band shows that were taking place in the area. She enjoys books, animals, hiking, and the beach, and sees as much live music as her “day job” schedule permits.
