RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE WEEK

Anne Castellano

This Saturday is Record Store Day, and there’s a full day of music planned at the Telegraph in New London. The live music begins at 2 pm with John Faraone (http://johnfaraone.bandcamp.com/), a folk musician from Providence. Next up will be the CBYD (Call Before You Dig) Jazz Trio (actually a quartet for this show) at 3 pm. Bassist Jaime Duquette and drummer Jonas Sanchez will be playing a set with Isaac Young and Nick DiMaria.  Daphne Lee Martin (http://daphneleemartin.com/) will follow at 4 pm. She’ll have a busy day, since she’ll also be running the record store with husband Rich Martin. Daphne’s been doing a lot of touring with her band to support her new album “Frost”. I’m not sure if this will be a solo show or a band show, she’s quite versatile that way. Sketch Tha Cataclysm (http://sketchtc.bandcamp.com/), a hip-hop musician from Waterbury, performs at 5 pm. At 5:45 pm Sam Perduta. from New Haven indie band Elison Jackson ( https://www.facebook.com/elisonjackson), will play a short solo set, followed by piano and painting duo Pocket Vinyl (http://www.pocketvinyl.com/) at 6:15. Mansfield, MA band the Hornets (https://www.facebook.com/themansfieldhornets) are up at 7 pm. The Hornets describe themselves as an “electro-folk power trio” with a heavy psychedelic influence. Jack Hanlon from the roots/rockabilly band the Throttles plays upright bass. Local punk favorites Horns of Ormus (https://www.facebook.com/HornsOfOrmus) are next at 8 pm. These guys have got credentials dating back to the beginning of New London’s music scene. Closing out the evening will be hardcore/noise/doom band Empty Vessels (http://www.reverbnation.com/EmptyVesselsMusic), also from New London, at 9 pm. Admission is free, and you can BYOB if you wish. The store will also have sales, giveaways, and limited edition Record Store Day releases for sale. The Telegraph is located at 19 Golden Street in New London, and the store opens at 10 am.

Willimantic Records will also have live bands in the store for Record Store Day. Music will start in the early afternoon and will continue until closing, which is 9 pm. Here is the tentative lineup of bands, and there is a possibility of additional performers being added.

2pm – Lituya Bay (http://lituyabay.bandcamp.com/)(ambient drones from Oberlin, Ohio)
3pm – Connor Dotay (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9t6LPdQR4Cw&feature=youtu.be) (Connor D’Auteuil from So Sorry, who plays guitar and mandolin)
4pm – Bristol Barnstormers (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TgT7CCjhgh8&feature=youtu.be) (ambient sounds with guitar & a couple of harmoniums)
5pm – George Hakkila (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c-TPyTBNspY&feature=youtu.be)

(local legend,  formerly known as Hamsteak, and influenced by Devo and Captain Beefheart)
6pm – The Crispies (http://thecrispies.bandcamp.com/album/covered-in-the-crispies) (Willimantic pop-punk duo Dan & Maggie from Spit-Take)
7pm – The Guy From Beastmaster (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E12bdJucvbQ&feature=youtu.be) (Dave from Florida=Death)
8pm – Losing Season (http://losingseason.bandcamp.com/) (heavier pop punk from Marlborough)

Willimantic Records is located at 744 Main Street (parking and entrance in the back) in Willimantic. The store opens at 9 am.

Later on Saturday night, the Weird Beards (http://www.theweirdbeards.com/) will be doing a show at the Oasis Pub in New London along with the Sweet Ones, from Brooklyn. The Weird Beards will be celebrating their seventh anniversary, and the show also serves as the band’s annual Four Twenty bash. With 4/20 falling on Easter Sunday this year, they decided to celebrate a day early. The Sweet Ones (https://www.facebook.com/thesweetones) are described as “quirk-rock, with combat boots, and incense burning”. Chocolate Milk will be the special guests. I’m not sure what time this actually starts, but you probably don’t need to get there before 10 pm. Cover is $5.

Anne Castellano is a New London, CT songwriter and guitarist who fronts her own original band, Anne Castellano and the Smoke. She has also played in several other bands over the years (the Uninformed, the Skin Walkers, and the Cavities) and spent several years performing as a solo artist.

In 2010 she released a full-length self-produced CD entitled “What’s Been Going On”. Anne also collaborated with Hugh Birdsall (Dogbite, the Reducers) on an EP called “In the Dark”, released in 2012 under the name SheSaidHeSaid. She is a 30-year veteran of college radio, and is currently doing the Deranged Radio Show on alternate Tuesday evenings from 6-9 pm at WCNI 90.9 FM in New London.

She grew up in New Fairfield, CT in a musical family, with a father who played guitar and listened to country artists such as Hank Williams and Patsy Cline, and a mother who loved Elvis Presley. Involvement in band and chorus in high school led to membership in the UCONN Marching Band and a two-week tour of Europe performing with the band in the early 1980s.

Anne moved to New London in 1987 because of the vibrant local music scene there. She began putting together her weekly concert calendar in 2005, to get the word out about all the local band shows that were taking place in the area. She enjoys books, animals, hiking, and the beach, and sees as much live music as her “day job” schedule permits.
