Thursday seems to be the busiest night of the upcoming weekend, with a couple of shows taking place on Golden Street in New London. The good news is that you will easily be able to see both of them. First up, there will be an early show at the Telegraph record store with Pocket Vinyl and Nemes. New London duo Pocket Vinyl (https://www.facebook.com/pocketvinyl) has released three albums, most recently “Death Anxiety” in 2013. Eric Stevenson plays piano and sings while his wife Elizabeth Jancewicz paints. At the end of the set, the brand new painting is sold to the highest bidder. They’ve been taking it slow this summer while Elizabeth works on her art, but they plan to do a lot of touring beginning in October. Indie rock band Nemes (https://www.facebook.com/nemesband) will be visiting from Boston. (In case you want to talk to your friends about the show, you pronounce the band’s name like “knee·miss.” It must be a drag for them to have to explain that all the time, but I digress.) The current lineup of the band, which includes two brothers, has been together for about two years and they plan to release their first full length album in the fall. Not your typical four piece, their instrumentation includes guitar, bass, drums, and violin. They have been nominated for several New England Music Awards, and Alternative Press has named them one of the top 5 unsigned bands in the country. The show starts at 6 pm and you can BYOB. All ages are welcome, and there is no cover.
There’s a special Thursday night show at 33 Golden Street in New London this week also. Out of town band Loom will be playing, along with local faves Fatal Film (www.fatalfilm.com) and Horns of Ormus (https://www.facebook.com/HornsOfOrmus) . Horns of Ormus is one of the hottest bands in town right now, and they just released their first full length CD “Bashful”, a couple of weeks ago. If you haven’t picked up your copy yet, here’s your chance. The order of bands is unknown, but out of town band Loom (https://www.facebook.com/loomct) will be playing the middle set. Loom is a heavy dreamy pop band from Bethel, CT, and they will be releasing an album soon. New London definitely owes thanks to Fatal Film (and also the Suicide Dolls) for their hard work bringing many good out of town bands here for shows. The show starts at 9 pm and cover is $5.
On Friday, there’s a Happy Hour show at the Bulkeley House in New London with ArleneWow! (https://soundcloud.com/arlenewow) and Dana Takaki. Both of these women are extremely talented performers. Arlene has been playing a lot of local shows lately, so catch her when you are able, and you’ll be happy you did. She has a great voice and a commanding stage presence. Violinist Dana Takaki is a versatile player who complements everyone she plays with. The show starts at 5 pm and there’s no cover.
If you’re a morning person, check out the Waterford Farmer’s Market on Saturday at 10 am for a performance by singer/songwriter Lauren Agnelli (https://sites.google.com/site/laurenagnelli/home) and violinist Dana Takaki. Lauren’s long musical career includes the Grammy nominated Washington Squares in the 1980s, a long musical partnership with Dave Rave, and the Americana group Amalgamated Muck. While you enjoy the free live music, you can purchase fresh locally grown produce as well as other local products including honey and soap. The market is located in the civic triangle, near the Waterford Town Hall on Rope Ferry Rd.
